Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a leather saya different from a lacquered wood saya?
A traditional lacquered wood saya is formed by splitting a wood blank, hollowing out a channel for the blade, gluing it back together, and applying layers of urushi lacquer. It is rigid, smooth, and historically precise. A leather saya wraps either a wood or resin core with genuine or PU leather, giving the scabbard a softer texture, a matte or semi-gloss visual tone, and slightly more surface grip. For display collectors, the leather finish tends to photograph with richer depth and shadow detail, and it integrates naturally with cord-wrapped handles and iron tsuba. Leather is also more forgiving of minor surface contact during handling than lacquer, which can chip or crack if knocked against a hard surface.
What is the difference between T10 clay-tempered and 1060 carbon steel in these katana?
T10 is a tool steel alloyed with a small percentage of tungsten, which refines grain structure and improves edge retention compared to plain high-carbon grades. When clay-tempered, T10 develops a differential hardness between edge and spine, and the resulting hamon — the visible temper line — is considered a hallmark of quality craftsmanship in the collector community. The blue or white hamon finish visible on some pieces here is a direct product of that process. 1060 carbon steel, by contrast, is through-hardened to a consistent Rockwell hardness across the blade, making it highly durable and an excellent choice for collectors who want a reliable full-tang display piece without the premium cost of differential tempering.
How should I care for a leather-wrapped saya long term?
Leather is a natural material that responds to its environment. For long-term display care, keep the saya away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which cause leather to dry, fade, and eventually crack. Apply a thin coat of leather conditioner — a product like Leather Honey or a neutral beeswax cream works well — once or twice a year to maintain suppleness. For PU leather saya, a simple wipe-down with a lightly damp microfiber cloth is sufficient; avoid solvent-based cleaners. The blade inside should be lightly coated with choji oil or food-grade mineral oil before storage to prevent oxidation, and re-oiled every few months depending on your local humidity levels.
Is Damascus steel katana a good choice for display collecting?
Damascus steel katana are among the most visually striking pieces in any sword collection. The layered folding process creates a flowing surface pattern — sometimes called a water grain or ladder pattern depending on the fold technique — that emerges across the entire blade flat. Because the pattern is a product of the specific steel pairing and the individual forge weld, no two Damascus blades are identical, which gives each piece genuine uniqueness as a collectible. Paired with a black leather saya and an ornate dragon tsuba as seen in this collection, a Damascus katana reads as a complete, high-impact display object rather than a uniform production piece.
Can leather katana work as gifts for sword enthusiasts?
Leather katana make excellent gifts precisely because the saya's visual character is immediately apparent — even someone unfamiliar with steel grades will recognize the craftsmanship in a studded leather scabbard or an embossed panel. For a first-time collector, a 1045 or 1060 carbon steel option with a dragon tsuba and matching cord handle offers a complete, well-balanced display piece at an accessible level. For an experienced enthusiast, a clay-tempered T10 or Damascus blade with detailed fittings signals genuine appreciation for the craft. Both categories are full-tang constructed, so they present and hold like authentic pieces rather than decorative imitations.

Awesome High Quality Sword for the money. Packaged very well and arrived on time. It's a Christmas present for my son so I only took it out of the box to inspect it. The handle and blade are both sealed in plastic so could not feel either one. I did see the blade has be wrapped in oil I was impressed by that. First impression is a great one ill definitely buy from this company again. Ill update after Christmas if I can . Awesome product guys.
