How do I prevent rust on a 1045 carbon steel sword replica?
Updated Feb 2026
Carbon steel, including 1045, will oxidize if left unprotected - especially in coastal or high-humidity environments. The most effective prevention is a light, even application of choji oil (a traditional Japanese sword maintenance oil) or a neutral mineral oil every two to three months. Apply it with a soft cloth, wipe off any excess, and allow the blade to sit horizontally before returning it to the scabbard. Avoid storing the sword inside the scabbard for extended periods without periodic airing, as trapped moisture accelerates surface oxidation. When handling the blade directly, use cotton gloves or a clean cloth - fingerprint oils contain salts and acids that can leave faint etching on carbon steel within days if left unaddressed.
