How should I maintain a lacquered gray saya long-term?
Updated Mar 2026
Lacquered sayas are wood at their core, which means they respond to humidity and temperature changes. Store the piece in a stable environment — ideally between 40–60% relative humidity — to prevent the lacquer from developing micro-cracks over time. Avoid placing the katana near heating vents, exterior windows, or direct sunlight, all of which accelerate surface degradation. Clean the saya exterior occasionally with a dry or very lightly dampened soft cloth; avoid alcohol-based cleaners, which strip lacquer finishes. The interior of the saya should never be oiled — the habaki and blade fit rely on a dry wood channel for proper retention. With basic attention, a quality lacquered gray saya will hold its finish and structural integrity for decades of display.
