What is a hamon line and why does it matter?

 Updated Feb 2026

A hamon is the visible temper line along the blade created by differential clay tempering. The spine is coated with clay before quenching, causing the edge and body to harden at different rates. This produces a unique wave-like pattern on each blade and results in a hard cutting edge paired with a resilient spine. The hamon is considered a hallmark of authentic Japanese sword craftsmanship.
