How are traditional Japanese swords constructed?

 Updated Feb 2026

Traditional construction involves forging the blade from high carbon steel, shaping it through repeated hammering, applying clay for differential tempering, quenching in water or oil, and finishing with hand polishing. The handle is assembled with a ray skin wrap, silk or cotton cord, and decorative menuki under the wrapping. A hand-fitted tsuba guard and matching fuchi-kashira fittings complete the assembly.
