Authentic Japanese tanto should be displayed horizontally on a dedicated tanto stand with the edge facing upward, following Japanese convention. Position the display away from direct sunlight, which can dry out the wooden scabbard and fade cord colors over time. For maintenance, apply a thin film of choji oil or mineral oil to the blade every two to four weeks if displayed unsheathed, or monthly if stored in the saya. Use only soft cotton cloths for application — never paper towels or abrasive materials. When handling, always grip the handle rather than touching the blade, as skin oils accelerate corrosion on carbon steel. For long-term storage, keep the tanto in its saya in a climate-controlled environment with moderate humidity. Avoid both extremely dry conditions, which crack wooden components, and high humidity, which promotes rust. With proper care, an authentic Japanese tanto maintains its condition and collector value indefinitely.
