Why is T10 considered the best all-around katana steel?
Updated Feb 2026
T10 occupies the sweet spot across every performance dimension. Its hardness (typically HRC 60-62 after heat treatment) provides excellent edge retention without the brittleness risk of ultra-hard steels. The tungsten content enhances abrasion resistance and refines grain structure for improved toughness. T10 responds to clay tempering more reliably than most carbon steels, producing clear, attractive hamon with natural variation. Maintenance is manageable with monthly oiling in controlled environments. And the cost positions T10 firmly in the premium-value zone — significantly better than entry-level steels without the price premium of Damascus. This combination of strengths without significant weaknesses is why T10 is our most frequently recommended steel.
