What makes a katana “real” versus a decorative replica?
Updated Feb 2026
Three things define a real katana: carbon steel blade (not stainless), full-tang construction (the blade extends completely through the handle secured by a pin), and individual forging (the blade is shaped by a smith, not stamped from sheet metal). Decorative replicas often use stainless steel (which is brittle at blade length), rat-tail tangs (a thin rod welded to the blade rather than the blade itself extending through), and are machine-stamped rather than forged. These differences matter for structural integrity, longevity, and collector value.
