Which steel is best for a functional samurai sword used in tameshigiri?

 Updated Feb 2026

For tameshigiri (test cutting), the three best options are T10 tool steel, 1060 carbon steel, and 1095 high-carbon steel. T10 offers the best overall performance — its tungsten content gives it superior edge retention through repeated cuts, and it responds well to clay tempering for a functional hamon. 1060 is the most forgiving steel, with excellent toughness that resists chipping even from slightly off-angle cuts, making it ideal for practitioners developing their technique. 1095 achieves the highest hardness and sharpest edge but is slightly more brittle, requiring more precise cutting form. Most experienced practitioners recommend starting with 1060 or T10 and progressing to 1095 as technique improves.
