What is a shikomizue and how does it differ from a standard shirasaya?
Updated Feb 2026
A shikomizue is a concealed sword format in which a blade is hidden inside what appears to be a walking stick, cane, or bamboo pole. The shirasaya and shikomizue share the plain wood housing concept, but the shikomizue's housing is specifically designed to disguise the blade as a non-sword object. The bamboo-style shikomizue in this collection presents the sword in a housing that mimics a natural bamboo segment - the sword draws cleanly from the bamboo-textured housing. This format has deep roots in Japanese martial arts culture, particularly associated with the zatoichi type of wandering swordsman who carried a sword disguised as a walking stick. For collectors, the shikomizue format adds a narrative layer of concealment and surprise that the standard shirasaya format does not carry.
