Product Details

This tanto features a hand-folded T10 carbon steel blade that has been clay tempered to produce a genuine hamon - the undulating temper line visible running along the full 12.5-inch nagasa. The clay tempering process creates differential hardness, reaching 62 HRC at the edge while keeping the spine resilient. The chrome-tone finish on the steel surface highlights the hamon pattern with striking contrast against the darker body of the blade.

The 6.3-inch tsuka is built on a full tang core and wrapped with black cotton ito in a traditional crisscross pattern over white polyurethane leather samegawa. The wrap is tight and even, giving the handle both a clean visual rhythm and a textured grip surface. A black cord sageo knot sits neatly at the saya mouth, adding a finished look to the overall presentation.

At the junction of handle and blade sits an oval alloy tsuba with a distinctive openwork design in black and gold tones. The pattern resembles an organic cellular motif with gold-edged borders, creating a bold visual anchor that pairs well with the all-black theme of the fittings. This style of tsuba is a standout feature among Japanese Tanto pieces in this class.

The saya is crafted from hardwood and finished in deep black piano lacquer, giving it a mirror-like gloss that complements the blade's chrome surface. It measures 12.5 inches and includes a kurikata with a gold-toned ring through which the black sageo is threaded and knotted. The overall effect is sleek and cohesive - a unified black-and-gold color story from pommel to saya tip. Collectors who appreciate this aesthetic may also explore the Black Scabbard Hamidashi collection for similar styling.

At 20.5 inches in total length and 1.5 lbs, this tanto is compact enough for desktop or wall display while carrying the weight and material quality of a serious collector piece. Every component - from the folded and clay-tempered blade to the lacquered hardwood saya - reflects considered craftsmanship in a traditionally proportioned Japanese short sword format.

The first order a full-size katana was exceptional, I mean it was/is perfect. The craftsmen and artists who made it must be commended, beautiful work. The tanto sword not so much. The tsuka mountings, fuchi and kashira, extend above the tsuka-ito and make it uncomfortable to hold. The habaki fit to the saya was loose and the blade rattled in the saya but I was able to fix both. The sageo wrap on the saya was loose but I can tighten it myself. It appears the attention to fit was a bit off as was the quality control for that sword. But I understand we all have off days. At first glance the tanto looks good and when displayed with the katana as intended it will do.
On the upside dealing with TrueKatana was a pleasure! Thank you.
