Product Details

The blade is T10 carbon steel, clay tempered using the traditional Japanese technique of applying clay unevenly before heat treatment. The thinner clay near the edge cools faster during quenching, producing a harder cutting zone, while the thicker clay along the spine retains flexibility. The visible hamon line runs along the polished surface as an organic, wavelike boundary that shifts appearance with viewing angle. T10 steel contains added tungsten for improved wear resistance and edge retention beyond standard carbon steels, and the blade reaches a hardness of 58 HRC.

The tsuka is wrapped in black ito cord over ray-skin samegawa, built on a full tang foundation that runs the entire length of the handle. At 6.5 inches, the grip provides comfortable two-handed positioning. The black cord sageo is tied at the scabbard mouth in a traditional knot pattern, complementing the monochromatic palette.

A bronze-tone alloy tsuba with an orchid theme serves as the visual bridge between handle and blade. The orchid motif carries classical East Asian symbolism, and the detailed casting work is accented by gold-finished fuchi and kashira fittings that frame both ends of the handle. These small metallic details create a refined contrast against the otherwise all-black build.

The black hardwood saya features a matte finish with hand-engraved floral and branch artwork etched directly into the surface - visible in the main image as delicate gold-toned illustrations along the scabbard body. This engraving craft elevates the scabbard from a simple protective sleeve into a display piece in its own right. For collectors drawn to this style, the Black T10 Carbon Steel Katana collection offers additional options in similar dark aesthetics.

Overall length measures 41 inches with a 21.5-inch blade, weighing 3 lbs fully assembled. The all-black color scheme - from blade to cord to saya - gives this katana a cohesive, understated presence that works as a standalone wall display or as an anchor piece in a broader collection. Those interested in the clay tempering process behind the hamon can explore the full Clay Tempered Katana Sword selection. Sword stand not included.

  • Bronze-tone alloy tsuba featuring an orchid motif adds an elegant design accent, paired with matching gold-accented fuchi and kashira fittings that frame the handle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and hardness does this black katana have?
This katana uses T10 carbon steel with tungsten content for enhanced wear resistance. The blade is clay tempered through traditional differential hardening, producing a natural hamon line along the edge. Hardness is rated at 58 HRC.
What makes the engraved saya on this katana unique?
The black hardwood saya features hand-engraved floral and branch artwork with gold-toned detailing along its matte-finished surface. This engraving craft transforms the scabbard into a standalone display element rather than a simple protective cover.
What is the tsuba design and what fittings are included?
The tsuba is a bronze-tone alloy guard with an orchid motif casting. It pairs with gold-accented fuchi and kashira fittings at both ends of the handle, creating a refined metallic contrast against the all-black ito cord and ray-skin samegawa wrap.

Honest feedback: My first ever katana. Beautiful craftsmanship. Does look exactly like the image online, and an intense feeling of caution and anxiety occurs when I unsheathe the blade. Hilarious, but highly important instruction/liability manual......DO NOT LICK THE BLADE. DO NOT CHOP VEGETABLES WITH THE BLADE. I can only image some of the cases.

It came in within a week, the blade was so sharp I accidently cut my finger testing it. Quality is okay for the price, visually it looks good and if you take care of it should last a long time.

Strong, sharp, high quality blade. I have 2 problems with it though. The first is the blade is slightly bent/warped to one side. It's not enough to be noticeable upon first inspection, but I eventually did notice it. My second problem is that the painted bits on the guard are a little bit sloppy, but once again not too noticeable and is to be expected on 200-300 dollar sword.

Overall very high quality blade for the price.
