Product Details

The blade on this Zatoichi-style shirasaya is forged from damascus steel, its folded multi-layer construction producing a flowing grain pattern across the flat and a clearly defined hamon line along the edge. The steel is hand-finished and polished to a chrome-toned brightness that contrasts sharply against the pale natural wood housing. At 41 inches overall and 3 lbs, the proportions feel substantial without being unwieldy.

The full-tang construction extends completely through the natural wood tsuka, anchored by a mekugi peg visible on the handle face. The tsuka itself is unbound natural hardwood - no ito wrap, no same - keeping the shirasaya aesthetic pure and letting the wood grain speak for itself. A black collar ring at the handle throat provides a clean visual break.

The tsuba is the single ornamental accent on an otherwise minimal piece. Cast in a gold-black finish, it carries an ornate scroll cutout motif that draws the eye right at the transition point between tsuka and blade. The black sageo cord detail at the collar reinforces the contrast between the pale wood and dark metal fittings. For those interested in exploring more options in this category, Handmade Damascus Sword brings together similar pattern-steel pieces across multiple styles.

The saya is turned from natural hardwood in the classic shirasaya form - no lacquer, no wrap, no hardware beyond the end cap. The pale, lightly grained wood surface mirrors the tsuka exactly, so sword and scabbard read as a single continuous rod when sheathed. This is the defining visual of the Zatoichi-style stick sword, and the natural wood finish here is clean and well-fitted. Overall length is 41 inches with a total weight of 3 lbs. Shipping package measures 43 x 4 x 4 inches at 4 lbs. The sword stand or holder is not included. This piece is intended for display and collection, referencing the iconic blind swordsman aesthetic in a damascus steel format suited to Japanese sword collectors.

Looked great when arrived other than some light scuffs on scabbard and having to lightly file inside of scabard for smoother drawing of and sheathing of sword.
