Product Details

The blade on this tanto is forged from Damascus steel using a folded multilayer process that produces a distinct flowing grain across the dark red surface. A hand-engraved dragon runs along the flat of the blade, visible against the deep crimson finish. At 21 inches overall and 2 lb, the proportions are classic tanto - compact and direct. If you're drawn to the red blade aesthetic, the Red Blade Tanto collection covers more options in this finish.

The handle is built on a full-tang core, with black PU ray-skin forming the base layer under white cotton ito wrapped in the traditional diamond-lozenge pattern. The contrast between the white wrapping and the black same beneath it gives the tsuka a clean, graphic quality that reads well against the red blade.

Fitting the tsuka to the blade is a black iron tsuba with an open ornate scroll cutwork design. The habaki immediately below is gold-tone, engraved with a fleur-de-lis motif - a small detail that elevates the overall koshirae presentation and bridges the dark hardware with the warmer tones of the blade.

The saya is shaped from hardwood and finished in a blue-white marble lacquer with a floral surface pattern. The mottled blue-and-white coloring creates a natural, ink-wash quality. A gray sageo cord wraps the saya in a functional knot, and a gold-tone kurikata secures the cord at the mouth. For more pieces in this Damascus construction, see the Damascus Steel Hamidashi collection.

The tantos were acceptable overall. However one was too tight when fitting in the scabbard while the other was too loose. Otherwise, good blades.
