Product Details

This tanto features a T10 carbon steel blade that has been clay tempered to produce a visible, natural hamon line along its edge. The differential hardening process yields a hardness of 62 HRC at the edge while keeping the spine resilient. The full tang construction runs the entire length of the handle, giving the piece solid balance at 1.54 lbs overall. A polished, hand-finished edge completes the blade work.

The tsuka is wrapped in red cord using a traditional diamond pattern over black real rayskin panels. Silver-toned fuchi and kashira cap each end of the 10.62-inch handle, providing a clean contrast against the deep red ito. The rayskin texture is visible through the wrap gaps, adding grip and visual depth.

A round alloy tsuba separates handle from blade, finished in a striking combination of gold relief over a dark, textured ground. The design depicts floral branches and nature motifs with detailed engraving - each petal and leaf rendered in raised gold against the blackened surface. This guard is one of the standout elements of the piece and pairs well with other items in our T10 Steel Tanto collection.

The saya is crafted from hardwood and coated in a deep, dark red lacquer with a subtle shimmer finish. A matching red sageo cord is tied in a decorative knot around the scabbard's midsection, and a small gold-toned kurikata anchors it in place. The overall effect is cohesive - red cord, red saya, and gold accents working together. Collectors drawn to this color scheme may also enjoy our Red Tanto selection.

Overall length measures 21.65 inches with the blade seated in its scabbard. The sword weighs 1.54 lbs unsheathed and ships at 2.2 lbs. Every element - from the clay tempered hamon to the gold floral tsuba and lacquered red saya - is assembled as a unified display piece rooted in traditional Japanese tanto design.

I've ordered 6 swords from Truekatana. This picture represents a Chinese Straight Sword and Chinese Broadsword I purchsed. I'm not a metalurgist, forgemaster or swordmaster. I learned a little Shao lin and wu shu broadsword in my youth, but that's about it. All that said these swords are truly functional, beautifully balanced and of exquisite workmanship. Besides being weapons they are beautiful works of art. I like to collect swords of all types and these two are among the most expensive I've bought, both being in the $1000 range. They are also, by far, the nicest.
I've also bought two katanas and two wakizashi. Though I did not venture into the same price range, they are truly viable weapons and beautiful art pieces.
Truekatana has truly exceptional pieces, fully functional as well as beautiful to behold. They are worth every penny and if you wait for a sale you will likely find something you like at a better than fair price.
