Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Japanese sword stand different from a general display stand?
A Japanese sword stand is designed around the specific proportions and display conventions of Japanese swords. The peg height is set for the diameter of a katana or wakizashi saya - typically 3 to 4 centimeters. The peg spacing is calibrated to support the sword at the balance points appropriate for Japanese sword lengths, which range from 35 centimeters for a tanto to 110 centimeters for a full-length katana. The tier heights in multi-tier stands allow enough clearance for the curved profile of a Japanese sword saya without requiring the sword to be rotated or positioned awkwardly. The edge-up convention is built into the stand design - the pegs are angled and positioned so that the sword naturally rests in the correct edge-up, handle-right orientation without needing to be specifically adjusted. A general display stand or a generic prop stand may hold a sword, but it does not take these specific dimensions and conventions into account, resulting in a display that looks less considered and less correct.
How many swords can I display in a limited shelf space using Japanese sword stands?
The most space-efficient approach to displaying multiple Japanese swords in limited shelf space combines multi-tier stands with wall mounts. A three-tier Japanese sword stand holds three swords on a footprint of approximately 25 by 40 centimeters, which is very compact for three full-length katana. Placing two three-tier stands side by side on a 80-centimeter shelf holds six swords on that shelf's surface area. For additional swords beyond what fits on available shelf space, a wall-mount bracket system eliminates the surface footprint entirely - mounted swords use only wall space at the chosen height. A combination of a three-tier shelf stand for the primary display and two or three wall-mounted swords in the same room provides a flexible, space-efficient layout for collections of five to ten pieces. The consistent black lacquer finish across both shelf stands and wall mount brackets maintains visual coherence when these formats are used together.
Are Japanese sword stands from this collection compatible with wall-mount configurations?
The table-top Japanese sword stands in this collection are designed as freestanding display pieces rather than wall-mount systems. They are not compatible with wall-mount installation. However, the collection includes dedicated wall-mount sword stand options that use bracket hardware to mount directly to a wall surface. The wall-mount brackets are finished in the same black lacquer used on the table stands and hold the sword in the same horizontal edge-up orientation, so they integrate visually with the table stands when used in the same display space. For collectors who want a mixed configuration - some swords on table stands and some wall-mounted - the consistent finish across both formats ensures the display reads as a unified system rather than a collection of mismatched products. The wall-mount brackets are installed using standard hardware appropriate for your wall type and require only basic tools.
What is the best way to photograph swords displayed on a Japanese sword stand?
Photographing swords on a Japanese sword stand well requires attention to background, lighting, and angle. Position the stand against a clean, neutral background - a plain wall or a fabric backdrop in white, grey, or black works well and avoids visual competition with the sword's fittings and finish. Lighting should come from one side at a low angle to bring out the surface detail of the blade, the texture of the ito wrapping, and the relief of the tsuba. Direct overhead or front-facing light flattens these details. For a single sword on a single-tier stand, a three-quarter angle from slightly above the sword level shows the curve of the blade, the handle, and the saya simultaneously in one frame. For a multi-tier stand with multiple swords, a straight-on frontal shot from the sword level shows all swords in parallel and communicates the collection as a composed grouping. Natural daylight from a window to one side works well and is often easier to manage than artificial lighting setups for capturing the fine surface details of Japanese sword finishes.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
