How many layers does a typical Damascus tanto sword have?

 Updated Feb 2026

The layer count varies depending on the forging technique and the individual smith’s approach. A standard Damascus tanto sword in our collection is folded between 13 and 16 times, which produces roughly 8,000 to 65,000 layers of steel. Each fold doubles the layer count, so the numbers escalate quickly. Our melaleuca (thousand-layer) steel pieces undergo additional folding cycles to achieve extremely fine patterning where the individual layers are barely visible to the naked eye, producing a silky, flowing grain. The visual difference between a lower-fold and higher-fold Damascus blade is noticeable — lower fold counts show bolder, more widely spaced lines, while higher fold counts produce tighter, more refined patterns.
