How should I display and care for a samurai sword collection?

 Updated Feb 2026

For display, a horizontal sword stand (katana kake) is the traditional and most popular option. A multi-tier stand accommodates a full daisho set — katana on top, wakizashi in the middle, tanto at the base. Position the display away from direct sunlight and areas with high humidity. For blade care, apply a thin coat of choji oil (clove-infused mineral oil) every few months using a soft cloth to prevent surface oxidation. Avoid touching the blade with bare hands, as skin oils and salts can etch the steel over time. When removing the blade from its saya for maintenance, tap the base of the handle gently rather than pulling the blade by the edge. With basic care, a hand-forged samurai sword will maintain its appearance and structural integrity for generations.
