How do I care for and maintain a hand-forged wakizashi sword?
Updated Feb 2026
Caring for a hand-forged wakizashi sword requires straightforward but consistent attention to the carbon steel blade, which is susceptible to surface oxidation if moisture is allowed to remain on it. The most important maintenance habit is to wipe the blade down with a soft, lint-free cloth after every handling session to remove fingerprints and moisture. Skin oils are mildly acidic and will cause small surface spots to develop on unprotected carbon steel if left in place over time. For ongoing protection, apply a very thin coat of camellia oil or quality mineral oil along the full blade length using a clean cloth, then buff away any excess until only a barely-visible film remains. This light oil barrier protects the steel against ambient humidity. Store the wakizashi either in its scabbard or on an open display rack in a room with stable temperature and relatively low humidity - avoid sealed plastic storage cases, which trap moisture against the blade surface. Periodically check the handle fittings and the mekugi pin to make sure nothing has loosened with seasonal temperature changes. This simple routine keeps a quality wakizashi in excellent condition for years of display use.
