Product Details

This katana features a 28.3-inch T10 carbon steel blade that has been clay tempered to produce a genuine hamon - the wavy temper line visible along the edge is a direct result of differential heat treatment, creating a harder cutting edge and a more resilient spine. The blade reaches 60 HRC hardness and has been hand sharpened to a refined edge, with a clean chrome-tone polish that highlights the zigzag hamon pattern running the full length of the nagasa.

The 10.2-inch tsuka is built on a full tang core and wrapped in red real rayskin beneath tightly wound black ito cord. The wrapping reveals diamond-shaped windows of red samegawa between each crossover, giving the handle both a secure grip texture and a bold visual accent. This construction method keeps the cord locked in place and provides confident handling at 2.85 lbs total weight.

Crowning the handle is an alloy tsuba finished in black and gold, featuring an elaborate cherry blossom and family crest motif. The gold floral relief work covers both faces of the guard, with a traditional kozuka slot on one side. This level of detail in the handguard elevates the piece well beyond a standard production katana and places it among Clay Tempered Folded Steel Katana collectibles.

The natural rosewood saya displays a warm brown wood grain with no lacquer coating, allowing the hardwood's organic texture and color to speak for itself. A braided black-red sageo cord is tied at the kurikata, and the koiguchi, kojiri, and kurikata fittings are finished in polished black to frame the saya cleanly. This understated natural look pairs well with the ornate gold tsuba for a balanced contrast between refined metalwork and organic simplicity.

At 40.5 inches overall, this is a full-size katana scaled for prominent display. The combination of clay tempered T10 steel, real rayskin, and natural rosewood construction makes it a strong addition to any Brown T10 Carbon Steel Katana collection, bridging traditional forging technique with carefully matched materials from blade to saya.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and heat treatment does this katana use?
This katana uses T10 carbon steel that has been clay tempered to achieve a hardness of 60 HRC at the edge. The clay tempering process produces a genuine hamon line visible along the blade, indicating differential hardening between the harder edge and softer spine.
Is the rayskin on the handle real or synthetic?
The tsuka features real rayskin in red, secured beneath tightly wound black ito cord. The wrapping creates diamond-shaped windows that expose the rayskin's natural nodular texture, providing both grip and a distinctive red accent against the black cord.
What is the tsuba design and what material is the saya?
The alloy tsuba is finished in black and gold with an intricate cherry blossom and mon crest relief design on both faces. The saya is crafted from natural rosewood with an uncoated brown wood grain surface, fitted with polished black hardware and a braided black-red sageo cord.

My katana arrived exactly as described and pictured. The first thing I noticed was the weight. It is heavier than expected but very well balanced. Some people say the hamon is etched and not real. I have worked in the steel industry for 25 years and can say it is truly heat treated. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I have already ordered another sword less than a week after I received the first one. Shipping time is slow but it actually ships from Longquan and not a warehouse in the states.
