Product Details

This katana features a T10 carbon steel blade that has been folded and clay tempered to produce a genuine hamon - the wavy temper line visible along the edge where differential hardening creates a natural contrast between the hardened cutting edge and the softer spine. The blade reaches 28.74 inches, carries a hardness of 58 HRC, and displays a clean chrome-toned finish that highlights the hamon pattern in direct light. As part of the Clay Tempered Katana Sword collection, this piece showcases the depth of traditional Japanese heat-treatment technique.

The tsuka measures 10.23 inches and is built on a full tang construction with a hardwood core. PU red samegawa provides texture and visual warmth beneath a tightly wound black cord ito wrap. Small gold-toned menuki sit beneath the wrapping, and the combination of red underlayer with black cord gives the handle a distinctive red-black accent pattern.

At the junction of blade and handle sits a round iron tsuba with gold-toned accents and intricate hollow cutout patterns. The openwork design creates a layered silhouette effect, and a copper habaki collar seats the blade firmly into the guard assembly. The craftsmanship here balances structural integrity with visual detail.

The saya is carved from hardwood and finished in piano lacquer with a baking varnish topcoat that produces a frosted, subtly textured black surface. At 30.7 inches, it houses the blade securely, and the black and red braided sageo cord is tied at the kurikata in a traditional knot. The frosted finish catches light differently than a high-gloss saya, giving this piece a muted, understated character.

Overall, the katana measures 41 inches in length and weighs 4.4 lbs. From the folded T10 steel blade to the frosted hardwood saya, every component reflects careful hand assembly. Whether displayed alongside other Red-black Katana pieces or presented as a standalone collectible, this sword delivers substance in both material and visual design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and heat treatment does this katana use?
The blade is forged from T10 carbon steel, folded and clay tempered to achieve 58 HRC hardness with a visible real hamon temper line along the edge. The differential hardening creates a harder cutting edge and a more flexible spine.
How does the frosted saya finish differ from standard lacquer?
The black hardwood saya is coated in piano lacquer topped with a baking varnish layer that produces a frosted, matte-textured surface. It diffuses light rather than reflecting it sharply, giving the scabbard a subdued, tactile character unlike high-gloss finishes.
What is the tsuba design and what materials are used?
The tsuba is a round iron guard with gold-toned accents and intricate hollow cutout patterns that create an openwork silhouette. A copper habaki collar secures the blade at the base, and the overall design pairs well with the red-black color scheme of the handle and sageo.

This Katana is beautiful and professionally made. The spine of the blade has a bevel finish from the Habaki to the Kissaki which is a nice surprise. I was expecting a flat spine like you find on knives. The blade has nice Harmon and has a really sharp edge. The Ito wrap is nice and tight and fitting are not loose. The Saya has a nice firm fit not to loose or tight when drawing the blade. I check everything and found some minor damage on Saya on Kurikata side on the Kojiri which has a dent on the edge. Other then that this is a beautiful Katana and I will be ordering more from TrueKatana. I recommend them to anyone looking for good quality Katana to buy as present or for your collection.
