Product Details

This aikuchi tanto features a T10 steel blade forged to 62 HRC and finished with a polished chrome surface. A visible hamon line runs along the edge, the result of differential heat treatment during forging. The full tang construction adds structural integrity to the 12.5-inch blade, making it a solid collectible piece from tip to pommel.

The handle spans 6.3 inches and is wrapped in black polyurethane leather that contrasts with the gold-tone fittings. Without a traditional tsuba guard, this aikuchi design lets the gold alloy habaki collar take center stage - its hammered texture catches light and creates a visual bridge between blade and saya.

What sets this tanto apart is the saya artwork. The black hardwood scabbard is coated in piano lacquer and engraved with detailed gold illustrations of cats in playful poses, surrounded by butterflies, mushrooms, and other nature motifs. The koiguchi (scabbard mouth) area features a cat face with fine whisker lines, while a second cat stretches across the body of the saya. Gold-tone bands near the koiguchi carry Japanese character engravings, adding authenticity to the traditional aesthetic. The rounded kojiri (scabbard tip) is finished with matching gold line work that frames another cat face - a cohesive design element that ties the entire piece together.

At 20.5 inches overall and 1.5 lbs, this tanto is compact enough for shelf display yet substantial enough to appreciate in hand. The saya measures 13 inches and fits the blade securely through friction alone. For more fixed-blade options, explore our Fixed Tanto collection. Sword stand not included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel is this tanto blade made from?
The blade is forged from T10 high carbon steel, heat-treated to 62 HRC hardness. It features a chrome-polished finish with a visible hamon line along the cutting edge created during the differential forging process.
What are the cat engravings on the saya?
The black piano-lacquered hardwood saya features gold-engraved illustrations of cats in playful poses, along with butterflies, mushrooms, and nature motifs. The koiguchi and kojiri both display detailed cat face engravings with fine whisker line work.
How is this aikuchi tanto different from a standard tanto?
This is an aikuchi mounting, meaning it has no tsuba (hand guard). The blade meets the saya directly through a gold-tone alloy habaki collar with hammered texture. This gives the piece a sleeker, more compact profile at 20.5 inches overall and 1.5 lbs total weight.

It was a gift for my son and I was pleased to give it. I would purchase an appropriate stand for the knife if you can supply one. Also I am thinking of purchasing a blade for myself later in the year.
Thanks
