Product Details

The blade is forged from 1000-layer folded melaleuca steel, a process that compresses and layers the metal repeatedly to produce a distinctive grain pattern visible along the flat. The heat treatment and oil quenching process yields a genuine hamon line - the wavy temper pattern along the edge that marks a traditionally finished blade. The hand-polished chrome surface brings out the contrast between the hardened edge zone and the softer spine, giving the blade a clean, mirror-like presence on display. This sword is part of our Melaleuca Steel Japanese Samurai Swords collection.

The tsuka is built over a full tang core and wrapped with real black samegawa (rayskin), then bound with cord in a structured diamond pattern. The kashira - the pommel cap at the handle's end - is sculpted in an aged ivory tone depicting a lion's head with flowing mane, hand-finished with visible detail in the mane and facial features.

The tsuba carries the lion theme forward in a gold-black colorway, with a sculpted guardian lion (foo dog) rising from the guard face surrounded by scrolling floral relief. The fuchi and other metal fittings maintain the same gold-black palette, tying all hardware elements into a coherent koshirae set.

The saya is covered in black rayskin and fitted with gold-tone mounts carved with lions amid dense foliate scrollwork. A dark red sageo cord is secured at the kurikata, finished with deep burgundy tassels that provide a warm color counterpoint to the black-and-gold hardware. The overall saya length accommodates the full blade with a firm, close fit.

At 37 inches overall and 6 pounds, this 1000-layer folded katana presents as a substantial koshirae piece suited for display or collection. Note: the sword stand shown in product images is not included.
