Product Details

This shirasaya katana features a 28.34-inch T10 carbon steel blade that has been clay-tempered to achieve a hardness of 60 HRC along the cutting edge. The clay tempering process produces a genuine hamon line visible along the length of the nagasa - a wavy, irregular temper line that marks the transition between the hardened edge and the softer spine. The result is a blade with a bright, mirror-like finish contrasted by the organic texture of the hamon.

The handle follows traditional shirasaya construction, carved from a single piece of wengewood that extends 10.62 inches. The blade runs full tang through the entire grip, secured internally for structural integrity. Without ito wrapping or same panels, the natural brown grain of the wengewood is fully visible, giving the handle a warm, organic feel. This is a defining feature of the Shirasaya Katana style - wood-on-steel simplicity.

Where the blade meets the handle, a brass habaki collar with an openwork pattern provides a snug fit and prevents lateral movement. The detail work on this collar stands out against the natural wood tones, with the brass showing a gold-toned finish and geometric cutout design that adds visual interest to an otherwise minimalist build.

The saya measures 29.52 inches and is crafted from the same wengewood as the handle, maintaining a unified grain pattern across the entire piece. A black horn-style koiguchi at the mouth of the saya provides a firm friction fit for the blade. The wood surface shows a natural textured grain with subtle variation in brown tones, untreated to preserve the raw character of the material.

Overall, this katana measures 40.15 inches in total length and weighs 2.53 lbs. The T10 Steel construction combined with the stripped-down shirasaya form makes this a focused collectible piece - no unnecessary ornamentation, just quality materials shaped by hand into a cohesive display sword.

  • T10 carbon steel blade clay-tempered to 60 HRC hardness with a visible real hamon line running along the 28.34-inch nagasa, offering a refined hand-finished edge
  • Full tang construction extends through the entire 10.62-inch wengewood handle, delivering solid balance across the total 40.15-inch length at just 2.53 lbs
  • Classic shirasaya design omits the traditional tsuba for a clean, minimalist profile - the blade seats directly into a seamless wengewood handle and saya
  • Wengewood saya measures 29.52 inches with a rich natural brown grain texture, fitted with a brass habaki collar featuring an openwork pattern for a secure blade seat
  • Each piece is hand-forged individually, with the clay tempering process creating a unique hamon pattern on every blade - no two are identical

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and hardness does this shirasaya katana have?
This katana uses T10 carbon steel that has been clay-tempered to reach 60 HRC along the cutting edge. The clay tempering creates a genuine hamon temper line and gives the spine added flexibility while keeping the edge hard and durable.
How long is the blade and what does it weigh overall?
The nagasa measures 28.34 inches, the wengewood handle adds 10.62 inches, and the total length comes to 40.15 inches. The complete katana weighs 2.53 lbs, making it lightweight for a full-size sword with full tang construction.
What wood is the saya made from and does it include a tsuba?
Both the saya and handle are carved from wengewood with a natural brown grain finish. There is no tsuba - this is a shirasaya design, so the blade seats directly into the wood with a brass habaki collar featuring an openwork pattern at the junction.

I was a little skeptical about the quality of the sword. Upon opening the package I could feel the balance of the sword before I unsheathed it. Once unsheathed I was told that impressed l, it felt like an instrument of battle.

This is indeed a beautiful piece of art, but the blade size is significantly smaller than I had anticipated. Nevertheless, I’m still very pleased with it!

My shirasaya katana arrived quickly and well packaged. This is my very first katana sword and I'm impressed by the craftsmanship of it. This thing is beautiful. I'd say it's moderately heavy but that was to be expected since it's huge slab of metal. I ended up having to hide it away from my kids because it's very sharp. I'm definitely buying a second katana but with a traditional style.
