Product Details

The blade of this Type 98 Shin Gunto replica is forged from high manganese steel and hand-finished to a chrome-bright polish. At 40.5 inches overall with a blade width of 1.26 inches, the nagasa carries the characteristic curvature of wartime Japanese officer swords. The steel is ground to a clean edge with a smooth shinogi line, giving the blade the sharp visual clarity that defines the shin gunto silhouette.

The tsuka is built on a full-tang core, ensuring the blade extends uninterrupted through the handle. Brown PU cord is wrapped in a tight diamond-lozenge pattern over black PU samegawa, replicating the ray-skin underlayer traditional to Japanese sword handles. Alloy menuki accents are set beneath the wrap, and the crowned alloy kashira at the pommel completes the period-correct profile.

The tsuba is cast from durable alloy in a gold-and-black finish, with a square-rounded silhouette and low-relief floral motifs at each corner - a detail consistent with the decorative fittings found on original Type 98 officer swords. A habaki and seppa fit snugly at the blade collar, keeping the assembly tight and properly seated.

The saya is the most visually striking element of this piece. Hardwood forms the core, wrapped in camouflage-pattern PU leather combining green, tan, dark brown, and black. A bronze-tone kojiri caps the tip, and the kurikata - fitted with a brown sageo - anchors the cord at mid-scabbard. This Leather Saya Katana construction brings a raw field aesthetic that distinguishes this piece within any WW2 Japanese Samurai Sword collection.

At 3.17 lb total weight and packaged at 43.3 x 3.93 x 3.14 inches, this replica is proportioned and weighted to reflect the historical officer sword format. Whether displayed horizontally on a wall mount or stored in its camo saya, this Type 98 shin gunto reproduction stands as a precise, detail-driven tribute to a significant chapter in sword history.

It was even better than I expected. It arrived faster than the original estimated time. Also, the pictures on the website did not do justice to this true work of art. A real beauty if I say so myself. I’m very happy with my purchase!

Nice workmanship, but fits a little loose. I used to have an ‘actual’ officers sword, and it had a metal latch to keep the sword from falling out is the scabbard. Would be nice to see if you could replicate this. I would definitely buy such a sword: practical and pragmatic.
