A samurai sword is any bladed weapon historically carried by Japan's samurai warrior class. The katana is the most famous type, but the samurai arsenal also includes the wakizashi (short companion sword), tanto (dagger), tachi (cavalry sword), and naginata (polearm). When people say "samurai sword," they usually mean a katana — but the term correctly covers the entire family of Japanese martial blades. Yes. In the United States, samurai swords are legal to purchase, own, and display in all 50 states for adults 18 and older. There are no federal restrictions on ownership. Focus on three things: blade steel, construction, and purpose. For functional use (cutting, martial arts), choose a full-tang sword in T10 or 1095 carbon steel — these handle impact and hold a sharp edge. For display, 1045 carbon steel or manganese steel offers beauty at a lower price. Avoid stainless steel blades over 12 inches — they are brittle and unsafe for any contact. Check that the sword is full-tang (the blade extends through the entire handle), which is the standard for all swords at TrueKatana.
A functional (battle-ready) samurai sword is forged from high-carbon steel with full-tang construction, a sharpened edge, and fittings designed to withstand real cutting. A decorative sword may use lower-grade steel, a rat-tail tang, or a dull edge — it is built to look good on a wall, not to cut. At TrueKatana, every product page clearly indicates whether the sword is sharpened and battle-ready or designed for display only, so you always know what you are buying.
Store your sword in its scabbard (saya) in a dry environment. Apply a thin coat of choji oil or mineral oil to the blade every one to two months to prevent rust. Never touch the blade with bare hands — skin oils accelerate corrosion. When wiping the blade, always move the cloth from spine to edge, not edge to spine. If your sword arrives coated in protective oil, this is normal for shipping and can be wiped off before display.

First thing is this is a sword for 150 and it is 1095 and ful tang that's a good start. Any collection has to have a kogarasumaru style blade which is beautifully polished and the grooves are perfect and it is quite sharp in the right places . The blade is very light but it feels powerful with to hands fast and deadly. The tsuba really stands apart among all the fittings, it is very solid and dense of quality alloy and almost 1/4 inch thick with good details . The tsuka ito is very tight and expertly done. The Saya arrived in perfect condition and is all well done and the fit is perfect being just tight enough. This sword is well worth the cost and the color scheme is subtle with a flash of silver like the blade just before you cut down your opponent.

The two katana true replicas are of very high quality. The blades' color is showing the knowledge of forging. The Tamahagane steel piece is of higher quality than the other one, a fact reflected also in its higher price point (beyond $1000 or colloquially a grand). The handcrafting of the tsuba (guard) for the one that I've chosen with the erotic samurai-geishas' motif is a very impressive work of art (see photos) and I would recommend it for both historians like me and passionate collectors of the medieval Japanese civilization. Very good work on the two scabbards and the other guard also. My only concern in regards to fabrication and construction is the fact that I would have liked to see brass or steel pegs where the hilt is mated to the tang area and not the traditional wooden pegs. It's ok for display purposes but it would be a problem when one starts to apply pressure and force through the blade when cutting or striking. Other than that I would recommend the purchase of models higher than $1k for true aficionados and for people who really want to test the blades' cutting ability. I will also return soon with another order for some Shirasaya katanas (sleek katana models without a guard) that were featured so artistically magnificent in the two Kill Bill masterpieces by mr. Tarantino !

Impressive quality!
I realize this is not a $10,000–$20,000 sword from from the exclusive Japanese masters with long wait lists, but I have to say this is quite well crafted. I talked to a buddy about it who knows a bit about blacksmithing, and he says this is legit.
It also has a beautiful aesthetic pleasing to the eye.
Im very happy with my purchase.

When I first received the katana the blade was pretty dirty and the habaki is stained I haven't tried cutting with it yet but hopefully it don't break on me
