Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a shirasaya different from a standard katana mounting?
A shirasaya mounting omits the tsuba (hand guard), menuki, and other decorative fittings found on a traditional koshirae-style katana. The handle and scabbard are both crafted from plain hardwood, creating a seamless, minimal silhouette. Historically, this design served as a storage mount — a "resting scabbard" — meant to protect a blade from humidity and corrosion during long periods when the sword was not being worn. In a shirasaya, nothing distracts from the blade: the curvature, hamon line, and steel grain become the focal point. This makes the format especially popular among collectors who value blade craftsmanship over ornamental hardware.
How is a clay-tempered hamon created on these shirasaya katana?
Clay tempering is a traditional Japanese technique where a mixture of clay, charcoal powder, and other minerals is applied unevenly along the blade before quenching. A thicker layer insulates the spine, allowing it to cool slowly and remain relatively tough and flexible, while the thinly coated edge cools rapidly and hardens. The boundary between these two zones produces the hamon — a visible temper line that appears as a cloudy, wavelike pattern along the blade. Because the clay is applied by hand each time, no two hamon lines are identical. On our T10 carbon steel and Damascus steel shirasaya katana, this genuine hamon is a natural byproduct of the heat-treatment process, not an etched or cosmetic imitation.
What is the difference between T10 steel and Damascus steel blades?
T10 is a high-carbon tungsten-alloy tool steel prized for its hardness and edge retention. It responds exceptionally well to clay tempering, producing bold, dramatic hamon lines with strong contrast. Damascus steel in this collection refers to multiple layers of different steels that are folded and forge-welded together, creating the distinctive wavy or rippled surface pattern visible on the finished blade. The folding process can produce hundreds of layers, and acid etching after polishing reveals the contrasting grain. In practical terms, T10 offers a clean, uniform appearance with emphasis on the hamon, while Damascus highlights intricate surface patterning throughout the entire blade. Both are full tang and hand-forged, so the choice often comes down to which visual style a collector prefers.
How should I maintain and store a shirasaya katana for display?
Because shirasaya mountings use natural hardwood without lacquer on the tsuka, moisture control is essential. Store or display the sword in a climate-controlled room with stable humidity between 40–60%. Apply a thin coat of choji oil (clove oil) to the blade every four to six weeks, or more frequently in humid environments, using a soft flannel cloth to spread an even film that prevents surface oxidation. Avoid touching the blade with bare fingers, as skin oils accelerate tarnishing. For the wooden saya and handle, an occasional wipe with a dry microfiber cloth keeps dust from settling into the grain. If displaying horizontally on a rack, position the edge facing upward in the traditional manner, which also minimizes contact between the cutting edge and the inside of the scabbard.
Are shirasaya katana suitable as gifts for sword enthusiasts?
Shirasaya katana are among the most gift-friendly formats in Japanese sword collecting. Their minimalist aesthetic appeals to a wide range of tastes — from seasoned collectors who already own ornate koshirae-mounted pieces to newcomers drawn to clean, modern lines. The matched daisho sets in this collection, which pair a katana with a wakizashi and tanto in coordinated rosewood, make an especially impressive presentation. Each sword ships in a silk bag with protective packaging, so it arrives ready for display without additional accessories. Because the shirasaya style emphasizes blade quality over decorative fittings, recipients often appreciate the craftsmanship-first approach, making it a thoughtful choice for birthdays, graduations, or milestone celebrations.

Super nice and good looking display piece, that's why i got it, probably not good at cutting and it doesn't really look stable enough to do so. but the wax in the saya is awful. Everytime you sheath it and take it out you gotta clean half a pound of wax off which is super annoying especially after you clean it. r

I personally wont be buying any blades from this website if i actually want to cut something harder than like a cantaloupe haha. r

The only recommendation I will make is please upload the physical dimension specs of the swords -- it would help with people who want to make custom stands or mounts. Otherwise these look lovely and are quality pieces I am glad I purchased. r

Very much "adult" style of katana, classy, and tasteful for my wall.
