Do antique-styled wakizashi require different care than standard finishes?
Updated Feb 2026
The patinated and aged finishes on antique-styled wakizashi benefit from a less-is-more maintenance approach. Aggressive cleaning or polishing would strip the deliberately applied patina, destroying the antique character. For the blade, standard carbon steel care applies — regular oiling prevents actual corrosion beneath any surface treatment. For the aged fittings, gentle dusting with a soft cloth is sufficient; avoid metal polishes that would brighten the patina. The scabbard’s aged finish should be left as-is rather than refinished. The guiding principle is to maintain the blade’s health while preserving the carefully crafted vintage appearance of everything surrounding it.
