Product Details

This tanto features a 11.8-inch blade forged from 1045 carbon steel and clay-tempered to 58 HRC hardness. The chrome-finish nagasa carries a visible hamon line that traces the temper boundary in a subtle zigzag pattern, giving each piece a one-of-a-kind visual signature. Full tang construction means the steel runs uninterrupted through the handle, reinforcing the overall structure from tip to pommel. Browse more options in our 1045 Tanto collection.

The 6.5-inch handle is built on a hardwood core wrapped in red ray-skin samegawa, then bound with black cotton cord in a traditional crosshatch pattern. The red samegawa peeks through the black wrapping at even intervals, creating a striking contrast that catches the eye without overwhelming the design. The cord provides a textured grip surface while keeping the aesthetic rooted in Japanese sword-making tradition.

A gold-tone oval alloy tsuba serves as the hand guard, its polished surface offering a warm metallic contrast against the dark handle and blade. Matching alloy fuchi and kashira cap the handle at both ends, while small alloy menuki ornaments sit beneath the cord wrapping, adding subtle dimension to the grip.

The 12-inch saya is carved from hardwood and finished in a black matte surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. A black sageo cord is tied around the saya mouth in a traditional butterfly knot, and the koiguchi fits snugly against the habaki to keep the blade seated. For similar pieces, see our Blackwood Scabbard Aikuchi selection.

At 19.68 inches overall and weighing 1.16 lbs, this tanto sits comfortably in the short-sword category - compact enough for a desk stand yet substantial enough to anchor a wall display. The black, red, and gold palette keeps the presentation classic, making it a versatile collectible piece that fits traditional and modern interiors alike.

  • Forged from 1045 carbon steel with a clay-tempered blade reaching 58 HRC hardness, the 11.8-inch nagasa displays a visible hamon line along its polished chrome-finish surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and hardness does this tanto blade have?
The blade is forged from 1045 carbon steel and clay-tempered to a hardness of 58 HRC. The tempering process produces a visible hamon line along the 11.8-inch chrome-finish nagasa, and full tang construction extends the steel through the entire handle.
Is this tanto full tang with a secure handle?
Yes, the tang runs the full length of the 6.5-inch hardwood handle. Red ray-skin samegawa is laid over the wood core, then tightly bound with black cotton cord in a crosshatch pattern. This layered construction locks everything in place and provides a textured grip surface.
What design details are on the tsuba and saya?
The tsuba is a gold-tone oval guard made from alloy, paired with matching alloy fuchi, kashira, and menuki. The 12-inch saya is carved from hardwood with a black matte finish and secured with a black sageo cord tied in a traditional knot at the mouth.

It's a little tight in the scabbard, and it seems that there was plastic stuffed inside it that I can't get out. Also, it is longer than I expected for a tanto, almost a wakizashi. But it's a good deal for only a hundred bucks.

Honestly? It turned out a lot better than I expected. It had a decent weight. it's well balanced, and it comes sharpened and oiled. Not only that, but it just looks gorgeous. I got it as a gift for my old man, and boy did he love it. It's a great piece to have and to give as a gift, truly.
