Frequently Asked Questions

What makes an Aikuchi different from a standard Tanto?
The defining feature of an Aikuchi is the complete absence of a tsuba, or hand guard. On a standard Tanto, the tsuba sits between the handle and the blade as both a functional separator and a decorative canvas. The Aikuchi eliminates this element entirely, so the handle's habaki (blade collar) fits flush and seamlessly into the mouth of the saya. This creates an exceptionally clean, unbroken profile that was historically associated with formal court dress rather than field use. From a collector's standpoint, this means the aesthetic weight shifts entirely to the quality of the handle materials, the wrap, and the lacquerwork on the saya - every surface must carry its own without a guard to draw the eye.
Why do collectors choose 1045 steel over stainless for display swords?
Stainless steel alloys prioritize corrosion resistance through high chromium content, but that same chemistry limits how deeply and distinctly a hamon - the visual temper line produced by clay tempering - can form on the blade. 1045 carbon steel, with its lower alloy content, responds more authentically to traditional differential heat treatment, producing a hamon that collectors can actually read and appreciate. It also develops a natural patina that changes subtly with age and environment, giving the blade a lived-in character that many serious collectors prefer. The trade-off is that 1045 requires periodic oiling to prevent surface rust, but for anyone who enjoys the ritual of blade care, that maintenance is part of the ownership experience rather than a burden.
How should I oil and store a 1045 carbon steel Aikuchi?
Apply a very thin, even coat of camellia oil (choji oil) to the blade surface every three to six months using a soft, lint-free cloth or a traditional nugui-gami rice paper. Less is more - excess oil can pool inside the saya and attract dust. Always store the Aikuchi in its saya when not on active display, as the close-fitting wooden scabbard limits air circulation around the steel. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and areas with fluctuating humidity, such as near windows or heating vents. If you live in a coastal or high-humidity region, a silica gel packet placed near the display stand offers additional protection. Never store the blade in a leather-lined case for extended periods, as leather retains moisture and acids that accelerate oxidation.
Is Damascus steel purely decorative, or does it affect blade quality?
On a collectible Aikuchi, folded Damascus steel serves both aesthetic and metallurgical roles, though the visual impact is the primary draw for most collectors. The layering process - folding two or more steel types repeatedly - creates the flowing grain pattern (called "jihada") that becomes visible after etching. In terms of structural character, the interleaved layers can offer a refined grain consistency, though modern mono-steel construction with proper heat treatment is equally sound. What Damascus unambiguously delivers is a blade surface that is impossible to replicate by machining alone, making each piece visually unique. Collectors who display their Aikuchi under gallery lighting particularly appreciate how the Damascus pattern catches and shifts with the angle of illumination.
Can an Aikuchi make a meaningful gift for a Japanese culture enthusiast?
An Aikuchi is one of the more considered gifts you can choose for someone who appreciates Japanese craft traditions. Unlike a full-length katana, its compact form factor makes it easier to display in an apartment or smaller home without requiring a dedicated stand area. The guardless design and court history give it a story worth telling - a conversation piece that most visitors will not immediately recognize the way they would a katana. Pairing it with a brief written provenance card explaining the Aikuchi's historical context adds a thoughtful curatorial touch. For collectors who already own longer blades, an Aikuchi rounds out a display by introducing scale variety and a distinct aesthetic tradition within the same Japanese sword-art lineage.

i have never used truekatana before and i am quite satisfied with 2 tanto purchases i made from there. first off, was packed well and was protected coming to this country. the shirasaya tanto is beautiful and is very sharp-cant wait to test cut with it. As a true gamble i ordered a higher end more ornamental tanto and was in disbelief as i saw that the blade is probably the sharpest of any blade i have. I cant wait to test. i have no doubt both tantos are properly pegged, functional, and will perform! if i have one complaint its that everything should come with its respective swordbag. I will order from truekatana again for sure.
