Product Details

The blade of this katana is forged from T10 carbon steel and clay tempered to achieve a hardness of 60 HRC along the edge. This differential hardening process creates a visible hamon line that runs the length of the 28.3-inch nagasa - a wavy temper pattern clearly visible against the polished steel surface. The result is a blade with a hard cutting edge supported by a more resilient spine, reflecting a technique rooted in centuries of Japanese sword-making tradition. The tsuka measures 10.2 inches and is built over a full tang core. Real black samegawa (ray skin) is applied beneath the wrapping to add texture and grip stability, while black cotton cord is tightly wound in a traditional crosshatch pattern. Gold-tone menuki accent pieces sit beneath the wrap, visible through the diamond-shaped gaps in the ito binding.

At the junction of blade and handle sits a gold-tone alloy tsuba featuring an elegantly rendered crane motif. The round guard has a warm brass appearance with raised crane silhouettes on both faces, symbolizing longevity and grace in Japanese culture. The habaki collar matches the tsuba's gold tone, creating a seamless visual transition from blade to fittings.

The saya is crafted from hardwood and coated in a deep black piano lacquer that delivers a mirror-like gloss across its 30.3-inch length. A black sageo cord is tied around the kurikata in a traditional knot, maintaining the all-black aesthetic. The lacquer finish not only protects the wood but gives the scabbard a refined, formal appearance that complements the gold-accented fittings. Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and heat treatment does this katana use?
This katana uses T10 carbon steel that has been clay tempered to reach 60 HRC edge hardness. The clay tempering process produces a visible hamon temper line along the 28.3-inch blade, with a harder edge and a more flexible spine.
Is this katana full tang with real samegawa?
Yes, the blade extends full tang through the entire 10.2-inch handle. Real black samegawa (ray skin) is wrapped beneath the black cotton cord ito, providing texture and a secure grip foundation consistent with traditional Japanese construction.
What is the tsuba design and what finish does the saya have?
The round tsuba is made from gold-tone alloy and features a raised crane motif on both faces. The 30.3-inch hardwood saya is coated in black piano lacquer for a high-gloss mirror finish, paired with a black sageo cord for a unified aesthetic.

Nice straight and sharp. The all black with gold hilites really adds a classy look. I'm no expert on clay tempered blades but polish is excellent. The pattern seems a little too even in it's wave but as I said I'm not yet with full knowledge. Overall very very nice my best one so far.

I will be reviewing the sword on the Youtube channel Mr. Excalibur. Very nice blade. Lovely hamon! Fittings' casting could have been better. The ito wrap could have been a little tighter. Nice saya! A little lose ... ok.

I recently purchased a Katana sword from this site, the Gold Crane Tsuba and I am extremely pleased.

It is a fine, sharp, well-made quality sword.
