Product Details

The blade of this shirasaya katana is forged from folded Damascus steel, producing a layered grain pattern that flows across the full 28.34-inch nagasa. Each fold builds density into the steel structure, and the red-toned finish gives the blade a deep, warm color that contrasts sharply against the blue fittings. Clay tempering along the edge creates a visible hamon line while hardening the cutting edge to 60 HRC, leaving the spine more flexible to absorb stress.

A 10.23-inch hardwood handle continues the blue piano lacquer finish found on the saya, creating an unbroken color line from pommel to scabbard mouth. The full tang blade extends through the entire handle length, pinned in place for a secure fit. Without ito wrap or ray skin, the smooth lacquered surface keeps the shirasaya profile clean and understated.

True to shirasaya tradition, this katana carries no tsuba or metal guard. The transition from handle to blade is marked only by a slim black habaki collar, keeping the lines minimal. This design choice puts full visual emphasis on the Damascus steel grain and the striking red-blue color pairing that defines the piece.

The saya measures 30.31 inches in hardwood with a blue piano lacquer surface that catches light with a fine metallic shimmer. The koiguchi fits snugly against the habaki, and the lacquer is applied evenly across the entire scabbard body. Close-up, the finish shifts between lighter sky blue and deeper navy tones depending on the angle, adding dimension to what could otherwise be a flat color.

At 40.55 inches overall and 2.64 lbs, this Shirasaya Katana balances reach with manageable weight. The sharpened Damascus blade, clay-tempered hamon, and full tang construction place it among serious collectible swords rather than decorative wall hangers. For those building a focused collection, it pairs well with other pieces from our Full Tang Shirasaya Sword lineup where every blade is built to the same structural standard.

  • Folded Damascus steel blade at 28.34 inches with a distinctive red-toned finish and layered grain pattern visible along the entire nagasa, hardened to 60 HRC for lasting edge retention.
  • Clay-tempered construction produces a natural hamon temper line across the blade, combining a hardened edge with a resilient spine for structural integrity and visual depth.
  • Blue piano lacquer hardwood saya at 30.31 inches delivers a metallic shimmer finish, paired with a matching blue hardwood handle for a seamless shirasaya silhouette.
  • Full tang blade runs through the entire 10.23-inch handle, secured with traditional mekugi pins for solid construction and balanced weight distribution at 2.64 lbs total.
  • Minimalist shirasaya design omits the tsuba entirely, letting the Damascus steel grain and blue-to-red color contrast serve as the sword's defining visual statement.
  • Overall length of 40.55 inches with a sharpened edge, finished by hand to maintain the authentic folded steel texture across every layer of the blade surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel is used and how hard is the blade?
This katana uses folded Damascus steel that has been clay tempered to reach 60 HRC at the cutting edge. The folding process creates the visible layered grain across the 28.34-inch nagasa, and clay tempering produces a natural hamon line while keeping the spine flexible.
Is this shirasaya katana full tang and sharpened?
Yes, the Damascus steel blade extends full tang through the entire 10.23-inch handle and is secured with traditional pins. The edge comes sharpened from the forge. Total weight is 2.64 lbs with an overall length of 40.55 inches.
What material and finish does the blue saya have?
The 30.31-inch saya is made from hardwood and coated in blue piano lacquer that produces a fine metallic shimmer. The matching blue handle creates a seamless color line, contrasting with the red-toned Damascus blade for a distinctive two-tone appearance.

Great gift for the grandfather as his first katana. The quality of this item competes with katanas that are several thousands of $.

Very clean quality, wish the inside end of the sheath would maybe be polished and it's alittle rough, but over all a quality blade.

Love it! It’s as close to a true Shirasaya as you could find for 250$. Gorgeous blade. It came well oiled and sharp enough to cut, yet not so sharp as to be flimsy and bend under impact. It will be perfect to practice my forms and slice objects out of the air when thrown at me by my friends. Thanks TrueKatana!
