Frequently Asked Questions

What is the shirasaya and how does it differ from standard katana mountings?
Shirasaya means white scabbard in Japanese, referring to the plain, undecorated natural wood mounting that gives the blade format its name. Where a standard katana mounting includes a lacquered scabbard, decorative handle with ray skin and cord wrapping, metal tsuba guard, and ornamental fittings, the shirasaya uses only plain unstained wood for both the handle and scabbard - no guard, no wrapping, no lacquer, no metal fittings beyond the very minimum required for structural integrity. This minimalist mounting style was used historically to store blades between active mountings, as the simple wood construction allowed the blade to breathe and be inspected easily. In the collecting context, the shirasaya mounting emphasizes the blade itself as the complete aesthetic object - the minimal housing is a frame that presents rather than decorates.
Why is full-tang construction specifically important for a shirasaya sword?
Full-tang construction is particularly important to verify in a shirasaya sword because the plain wood handle conceals the blade tang completely - the handle's minimalist design gives no external visual markers of the tang construction quality. In a standard decorated katana, the mekugi pins are visible through the handle wrapping and can be observed directly. In a shirasaya, the plain wood handle covers the tang assembly entirely. Full-tang confirmation means the blade steel extends through the complete plain wood handle rather than ending in a short partial tang that leaves most of the handle as hollow or poorly supported wood. For collectors, a full tang shirasaya is a genuine blade collectible in a plain housing; a partial tang shirasaya in plain housing has no construction quality advantage over a decorative prop.
What steel grades are available in the full tang shirasaya collection?
Full tang shirasaya swords in this collection use T10 carbon steel, Damascus steel, Manganese Steel, and Melaleuca pattern steel. T10 clay-tempered pieces in natural-wood shirasaya present the traditional hamon alongside the minimal housing - the stark combination of plain wood and the blade's technical craft marker creates an understated sophistication. Damascus steel shirasaya include both natural-wood presentations and blue-red blade configurations where the fold-forged layered pattern appears with the shirasaya format. Manganese Steel shirasaya in white finish presents the high-surface-hardness material in a clean, pale aesthetic. Melaleuca pattern steel pieces add the 1000-layer visual texture. Each grade presents the shirasaya format from a different material quality perspective.
How should full tang shirasaya swords be maintained given the plain wood housing?
Full tang shirasaya swords require the same blade maintenance as any carbon steel sword, with specific attention to the plain wood housing. For the blade: wipe with a soft lint-free cloth after every handling, apply thin camellia or mineral oil coating, buff away excess. The blade must be properly oiled before resheathing to prevent moisture trapping inside the close-fitting plain wood housing - moisture trapped between blade and wood accelerates oxidation. For the wood housing: keep dry and away from extreme humidity changes that cause wood to expand and contract. Do not oil or lacquer the plain wood exterior - the natural wood character is part of the shirasaya aesthetic. Inspect the handle and scabbard wood periodically for any cracking at stress points, particularly at the scabbard mouth where the blade enters.

Blade is nice, but not very sharp. The sheath part (forgot what it’s called) is poor quality, and it leaves chips of wood on the blade when pulling it out
