Product Details

This full tang tanto features a 12.5-inch blade forged from 1045 carbon steel, hand-polished to a clean chrome finish. The steel is hardened to 58 HRC, giving the edge solid retention while maintaining enough flexibility to resist brittleness. A brass habaki sits snugly at the blade's base, creating a tight seal where steel meets scabbard and adding a warm gold accent against the polished surface.

The 6.5-inch tsuka is built on a traditional wooden core wrapped in red ray-skin samegawa, visible through the diamond gaps of the black cotton ito. The contrast between the vivid red same panels and the dark ito creates a bold visual rhythm that references classic Edo-period mounting styles. Fuchi and kashira fittings in a copper tone cap both ends of the handle cleanly.

At the center of the sword's profile sits a bronze-toned alloy tsuba carved with an orchid motif. The relief work shows layered petals and curving stems across the round guard, a design drawn from the traditional Four Gentlemen theme in Japanese metalwork. The patina-style finish on the alloy gives it an aged, antique character that pairs well with the warm brass habaki below it.

The black hardwood saya measures 12.5 inches and features a textured matte surface with a fine speckled pattern. A black sageo cord is tied through a gold-accented kurikata, and the overall finish gives the scabbard a subtle leather-like appearance without lacquer gloss. The fit between blade and saya is snug with minimal rattle. For more pieces in this style, browse our Black Tanto Knife collection.

At 21.5 inches overall and 1.5 lbs, this tanto sits comfortably in the hand and displays well on a stand or shelf. The black, red, bronze, and gold color palette keeps the design grounded and cohesive. Collectors looking for 1045 Carbon Steel Aikuchi variants will find this orchid-themed mounting a distinctive addition to a short sword display.

  • Forged from 1045 carbon steel with a hand-polished chrome finish, this full tang tanto blade measures 12.5 inches and reaches 58 HRC hardness for lasting edge retention.

  • Black hardwood saya with a textured matte surface houses the blade securely, paired with a matching black sageo tied in a traditional knot - overall length 21.5 inches at 1.5 lbs.

High quality, extremely sharp, excellent balance, and beautiful. I walk my 4½ pound Biewer Terrier in my back woods. Trailcams have captured single and double coyote and groups of feral dogs. I have the tanto on my belt and feel very safe and able to protect my tiny dog should I need to.

Nice, solid, hefty Tanto short sword. Seems to be well-built and includes a wooden sheath. The top of the edge near the tip is sharp, although; the further you go down the edge the less sharp it becomes. Not a bad sword for the price and steel used.

I'm an early Iaido student 2nd year and I wanted a small tanto to complement the shinken.
I didn't want something too big like a Wakizashi but for a tanto it's on the longer side.
Depending on your hand size this is a single handed tsuka.
For really small hands you might be able to get both hands around the tsuka.
I like the red and black tint on the tsuka that's what attracted me.
It looks great and I feel like the craftsmenship on this blade is worth more than it's value.
Note: blade seemed to come in dry no choji oil appeared to be on the blade. So check to make sure.

The Tanto Short Sword Katana is a very nice piece. The scabbard does feel a bit cheap in quality - almost like a strong pressed cardboard material. But it's certainly workable. The blade rattles inside of it, and "lock" very tightly in the scabbard. In other words, the sword could easily fall out of the scabbard if it is turned upside down. So, I can't give 5 stars. I do like the look of the piece though; and the sword itself feels like good quality.
