Product Details

This tanto is forged from T10 carbon steel using traditional clay tempering and folding techniques. The process produces a distinctive real hamon along the 12.5-inch nagasa - a natural temper line visible as a zigzag pattern near the edge. Heat treated and oil quenched to 62 HRC, the blade delivers a hard, refined edge while the spine retains flexibility. The chrome-polished surface contrasts sharply against the hamon, giving the blade a striking visual profile that collectors of T10 Tanto swords will appreciate.

The tsuka measures 6.5 inches and is wrapped in brown cotton ito over black polyurethane leather samegawa, creating the classic diamond pattern with a secure, textured feel in hand. The full tang construction runs the entire length of the handle, secured with mekugi pins for structural integrity. Brown ito against black same produces a warm, understated color combination that carries through the entire piece.

At the junction of blade and handle, a black alloy tsuba provides a clean guard profile. The habaki and seppa feature a brass-gold tone with a four-petal clover mon engraved on the face - a detail visible in the close-up that adds historical character to the fittings. The gold accent against the dark tsuba creates an eye-catching contrast point.

The saya is crafted from hardwood wrapped in leather, finished in matte black with hand-carved kanji characters raised across its surface. This textured carving gives the scabbard a tactile, dimensional quality rather than a flat lacquer finish. A sageo cord in brown and navy blue tones is tied around the kurikata in a traditional knot, complementing the brown ito of the handle. This style of carved saya is a hallmark of the Clay Tempered Aikuchi collection.

At 21.5 inches overall and 1.5 lbs, this tanto balances compactness with presence. The proportions are true to traditional Japanese short sword design, making it equally suited for a wall-mounted display, a desk stand, or as a centerpiece in a growing edged collection. Sword and scabbard included; stand sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and heat treatment does this tanto use?
This tanto is forged from T10 carbon steel that has been folded and clay tempered, then oil quenched to reach 62 HRC. The clay tempering process creates a real hamon - the visible zigzag temper line along the edge - while keeping the spine resilient.
Is the hamon on this tanto real or etched?
The hamon is real, created through traditional clay tempering during the heat treatment process. Clay is applied to the spine before quenching, resulting in differential hardening that produces a natural, irregular temper line visible along the blade edge.
What are the saya carvings and tsuba design on this tanto?
The black matte saya is hardwood wrapped in leather with raised kanji characters carved into the surface, paired with a brown and navy sageo. The black alloy tsuba sits alongside a brass-toned habaki engraved with a four-petal clover mon crest.

The ito is semi-tight. The blade itself is very well done. Habaki is nicely done. The kahira and fuchi are very plain nothing special but the do their job. Sageo is definitely one of the nicer ones i have seen for a blade of this price. The Tsuba design is nice and the saya has a really cool design. Overall a nice collectors piece. I am happy with the selection.

Love the Tanto. Exactly as described and seems to be the quality I expected. The natural hamon from the clay tempering is beautiful. I will be testing the blade so I hope the T10 lives up to toughness. Don’t hesitate to buy this.

Very good and clean nice finish very sharp out of the box and shipping was fast, very very good Professionally made tanto knife for the price. Good sheath and the only complaint is how easily it gets dirty, but it is incredibly sharp and reliable, I even cut my finger open with barely any force
