Frequently Asked Questions

What steel types are used in White Wakizashi blades?
Most pieces in this collection are forged from either 1045 carbon steel or T10 tool steel. 1045 is a medium-carbon alloy valued for its toughness and ease of maintenance, making it a reliable choice for display collectors who want a resilient blade without intensive upkeep. T10 is a high-carbon tungsten-alloy steel that accepts differential clay tempering exceptionally well, producing a visible hamon temper line along the edge. The tungsten content also improves wear resistance and helps the steel hold a stable grain structure during the quenching process, resulting in a blade with both visual character and excellent metallurgical integrity.
How is the white lacquer saya made and how durable is it?
The scabbard starts as a block of hardwood — typically ho wood or a comparable tight-grain species — split in half and hand-carved to match the blade's unique curvature. After the two halves are bonded together, the exterior receives multiple coats of piano-grade lacquer. Each coat is sanded smooth before the next is applied, building up a deep, mirror-like white finish. This layered lacquer is surprisingly resilient against minor scuffs and fingerprints. To keep it looking pristine, wipe it periodically with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can yellow white lacquer over time.
Can I pair a White Wakizashi with a katana for a daishō display?
Absolutely. The daishō — the traditional paired set of a longer katana and a shorter wakizashi — is one of the most visually striking ways to display Japanese swords. Matching both blades in a white theme creates a cohesive aesthetic that draws immediate attention. Our White Blade Katana collection offers full-length pieces with complementary white finishes on the saya, tsuka, or blade, so you can coordinate materials and color tones across both swords. A dual-tier horizontal kake stand is the classic mounting method for a daishō pair.
What is a genuine hamon and how can I tell if mine is real?
A hamon is the visible temper line that runs along the blade near the cutting edge, created during differential clay tempering. The smith coats the spine and flats with a thick layer of clay while leaving the edge thinly coated or bare, then heats and quenches the blade. The exposed edge cools rapidly into hard martensite, while the insulated spine remains softer pearlite. The boundary between these two crystalline structures produces the hamon. A genuine hamon has a slightly three-dimensional quality visible under angled light — you can see subtle grain activity (nie or nioi) within the line itself. Etched or acid-drawn cosmetic hamons, by contrast, appear flat and uniform without that granular depth.
How should I maintain and store a White Wakizashi long-term?
For the blade, apply a thin coat of choji oil or light mineral oil every few weeks using a soft flannel cloth. This prevents surface oxidation, which carbon steel is naturally prone to. Avoid touching the blade with bare fingers, as skin oils accelerate rust spots. For the white saya, store the sword horizontally on a display stand in a room with stable humidity between 40 and 60 percent. Excessive dryness can crack the wood beneath the lacquer, while high humidity encourages mold. If you keep the sword in a cloth bag inside a cabinet, add a small silica gel packet to regulate moisture. Periodically inspect the mekugi bamboo pin that secures blade to handle and ensure it remains snug.

It is a very beautiful wakizashi. The steel and binding are very nice. The handle though does have a small wiggle in the base of it.

Well made, only complaint is the metal of the blade doesn't seem to go fully into handle, feels like the weight of it is far too forward, otherwise great purchase
