Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main Chinese greatsword forms and their historical significance?
The most historically significant Chinese greatsword forms include the zhanmadao and the miao dao, each associated with specific historical periods and military functions. The zhanmadao - literally 'horse-chopping saber' - is a two-handed sword with an exceptionally long blade and extended handle that was used in Chinese military history to counter cavalry. The long blade was specifically proportioned to reach mounted opponents and their horses, giving infantry a means of effectively engaging cavalry that shorter weapons could not provide. The miao dao is a long saber with an extended handle that allows two-handed grip while maintaining a curved single-edged blade profile - it bridges the sword and polearm traditions in a distinctly Chinese way. The miao dao's proportions - relatively slender blade with a long curved form - give it exceptional visual elegance for a large format sword, and it is associated with Chinese martial arts traditions that developed specific two-handed forms for the blade. Both forms have been recreated as high-carbon steel collectibles that reference their historical originals in proportions and overall design.
How does a Chinese greatsword compare in size to a Japanese odachi?
A Chinese greatsword and a Japanese odachi are both large-format two-handed sword forms that extend well beyond the single-handed blade proportions of their respective sword traditions, and both create similarly commanding display presences. The odachi's blade length typically exceeds three feet, with overall length including handle often reaching four feet or more, and its characteristic deep curve and refined Japanese blade geometry give it an elegant large-format presence. Chinese greatswords like the zhanmadao and miao dao match or exceed these dimensions in blade length, with handle proportions designed for two-handed use. The two forms differ fundamentally in blade geometry and cultural visual character: the odachi maintains the Japanese katana's characteristic sori curve and refined taper, while the zhanmadao has broader blade proportions and a more pronounced curve, and the miao dao has a long, relatively slender curved form distinct from either the odachi or the standard dao. Both are exceptional display collectibles that command wall space with their scale, and both benefit from display hardware specifically sized for their extended proportions.
What steel grades are used in Chinese greatsword collectibles?
Chinese greatsword collectibles in this collection use high-carbon steel grades that provide the structural integrity appropriate to the extended blade dimensions of the large-format Chinese sword forms. Manganese Steel is the primary grade across the greatsword collection: its exceptional surface hardness and consistent finish quality are well suited to the extended blade profiles of the zhanmadao and miao dao, and the grade's properties allow the extended blade to maintain consistent quality from base to tip across the full blade length. 1095 carbon steel provides premium high-carbon composition in select greatsword pieces. Damascus steel Chinese greatswords are particularly visually compelling because the extended blade surface allows the fold-forged layered patterns to be displayed at a larger scale than shorter format swords can achieve - more of the Damascus patterning is visible simultaneously, giving the greatsword's Damascus blade a visual richness that is enhanced by its scale. All grades are used with full-tang construction appropriate to the two-handed Chinese greatsword format.
What display hardware is needed for a Chinese greatsword?
Displaying a Chinese greatsword requires hardware appropriately sized to its extended blade length and heavier weight compared to standard single-handed swords. A horizontal wall bracket for a Chinese greatsword should have peg spacing wider than standard single-sword brackets - typically three or more pegs positioned at intervals along the blade length to support the extended blade without placing concentrated stress at only two points. The pegs should be positioned to support the scabbard at points that distribute the weight evenly, as the longer lever arm of an extended blade creates more torque on the mounting points than a shorter sword creates. Weight-rated mounting hardware is more important for a greatsword than for a standard sword - verify that the wall anchors and bracket hardware are rated to support the combined weight of the sword and a safety margin. For tabletop display, a floor-standing upright display rack sized for longer blades is one of the most effective ways to display a Chinese greatsword, as it allows the full length of the sword to be visible vertically while keeping it stable and accessible for inspection.

Very nice historic style Chinese sword. Excellent fittings and scabbard. Not very sharp, would need work to be a "cutting" sword, but for the price, I think it is a fine value. Size is smallish, but accurate to the period it represents.

I like the weapon very much; however, I am a little disappointed that the weapon lacks a sharp cutting blade.

Handmade Chinese Straight Double Edged Sword High Manganese Steel Han Dynasty With Brown Scabbard: r
The "fishscale" engraved Jian is a work of art. Perfectly balanced and handsome redwood, I can see why they tout this model as something of a flagship.r

Handmade Chokuto Ninjato And Tanto Sword Set With Blue Blade:r
The blades are the selling point here. They are a lovely deep-blue with a slight reddish purple gradient in the light, with a striking pattern down the spine. The pattern is adhered very well to the surface. The grips and fittings are a bit on the cheap-side but they are designed for "minimalist, tactical use" so they may just what some people are looking for. The blades are still full tang, as evidenced by the great balance point.r

Handmade Japanese Katana Sword With Golden Blade And Brown Scabbard:r
This is a hidden gem. I feel like it resembles a "Dao" in many ways, but the blade does appear to have a traditional katana-style taper. The use of leather and the bronze-like highlights on the scabbard are stunning. The golden blade is a subtle hue, not overpowering, giving it a very classy appearance.r

All of these swords feel rock-solid in your hand. Highly recommended all around
