Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Tang Jian?

A Tang Jian is a traditional Chinese double-edged straight sword inspired by weapons from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). During this period, Chinese sword-making reached a high level of craftsmanship, and the Tang Jian became known for its elegant proportions, balanced handling, and refined design. Today, modern Tang Jian swords are appreciated by collectors, martial arts practitioners, and enthusiasts of Chinese history. Many handcrafted versions combine traditional aesthetics with modern forging techniques while preserving the classic appearance of this iconic Chinese sword.

What is the difference between a Tang Jian and a Han Jian?

Although both are traditional Chinese straight swords, the Tang Jian and Han Jian reflect different historical periods and design philosophies. Han Jian swords often feature simpler fittings and broader blades associated with the Han Dynasty, while Tang Jian designs generally became more refined, with elegant guards, improved balance, and decorative fittings influenced by the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Modern reproductions of both styles vary by maker, but collectors often choose between them based on historical interest, visual preference, and intended use.

Is a Tang Jian full tang?

Yes. All swords offered by TrueKatana feature a full tang construction. A full tang design means the blade extends through the entire handle, providing improved strength, stability, and balance. This construction is widely preferred for handcrafted functional swords because it offers greater durability than partial tang designs. When comparing Tang Jian models, you should also evaluate the blade steel, heat treatment, fittings, and overall craftsmanship to choose the sword that best suits your collection or practice.

Are Tang Jian swords legal in the United States?

In many parts of the United States, owning a traditional Chinese sword such as a Tang Jian is legal. However, regulations regarding transportation, public carry, and display differ from one state and local jurisdiction to another. Before purchasing a Tang Jian, review the laws that apply where you live. If you intend to bring the sword to a convention, martial arts event, or historical exhibition, always check the organizer's official policy beforehand, as many venues restrict or prohibit metal swords regardless of local regulations.

Where can I buy a Tang Jian?

If you're looking for a handcrafted Tang Jian, TrueKatana offers a carefully selected collection featuring full tang construction, traditional Chinese styling, and premium blade materials such as T10 steel, Damascus steel, folded steel, and high carbon steel. Each product page includes detailed specifications, blade dimensions, steel information, and high-quality images to help you compare different models. Whether you're buying for collection, martial arts practice, display, or as a meaningful gift, choosing a specialized sword retailer provides greater confidence in quality and customer support.

Customer Reviews

First off , the shipping time was fantastic ....delivered within a week.r
Secondly , having taken the whole thing apart ,and putting it back together again , i can say that the build is very robust.... and it cut through a 2x4 like a hot knife !!r
It is heavier in the hand that a European sword of similar length , by about a pound and a half , the balance point being 9 inches forward of the guard , so it is very forward in the thrust .....it WILL come out of your hand if you are not paying attention . It is DEFINITELY NOT for whipping around like a WUSHU performer , and a cute little "Xena" wrist roll will either snap said wrist or send the damn thing flying , or BOTH ....That said ; there is a mantra among Motorcycle riders..."There are no Small mistakes on a big bike ".....same here . This is not for Beginners....this is for a seasoned practitioner... i can Guarantee yo that Bubba Newbie will remove parts of his anatomy , or God forbid , come out of this hand , trying to imitate a scene from Mulan ( blatant Donny Yen plug) .r
Aside from being a very formidable weapon , it is a work of art.r

Handmade Chinese Straight Double Edged Sword High Manganese Steel Han Dynasty With Brown Scabbard: r
The "fishscale" engraved Jian is a work of art. Perfectly balanced and handsome redwood, I can see why they tout this model as something of a flagship.r

Handmade Chokuto Ninjato And Tanto Sword Set With Blue Blade:r
The blades are the selling point here. They are a lovely deep-blue with a slight reddish purple gradient in the light, with a striking pattern down the spine. The pattern is adhered very well to the surface. The grips and fittings are a bit on the cheap-side but they are designed for "minimalist, tactical use" so they may just what some people are looking for. The blades are still full tang, as evidenced by the great balance point.r

Handmade Japanese Katana Sword With Golden Blade And Brown Scabbard:r
This is a hidden gem. I feel like it resembles a "Dao" in many ways, but the blade does appear to have a traditional katana-style taper. The use of leather and the bronze-like highlights on the scabbard are stunning. The golden blade is a subtle hue, not overpowering, giving it a very classy appearance.r

All of these swords feel rock-solid in your hand. Highly recommended all around

This Sword is very beautiful to look at and very sharp to the touch. The only reason that I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is beachside there were a couple of pieces that were not fitted properly onto the scabbard and came a little loose which I had to fix myself.Other than that this blade is a work of art and would highly recommend.
