Ming Dao Sword — Hand-Forged Chinese Broadsword in the Classical Dao Tradition

The dao is the foundational Chinese sword form - single-edged, curved, and built for the cutting mechanics of Chinese martial arts and military use. The ming dao, or famous dao, encompasses the refined broadsword styles that reached their peak development during the Ming and Qing dynasties, culminating in the oxtail dao form that remains the most recognizable and widely practiced style in contemporary Chinese sword collecting. The swords in this collection represent this tradition using Damascus and folded Melaleuca steel with clay tempering and full-tang construction throughout.Folded Melaleuca steel is the direct descendant of the classical Chinese sword forging method. The steel billet is folded repeatedly during forging, refining the grain structure and producing the characteristic layered appearance visible on finished blades. Clay tempering during the heat treatment creates differential hardness - a harder cutting edge and a tougher, more resilient spine - which is the defining quality standard of a classically constructed Chinese dao. Damascus pattern-welded steel provides a more visually dramatic alternative with the flowing grain patterns unique to each blade.The oxtail dao silhouette - named for the widened tip section that shifts the blade's center of mass forward - produces a sword with a distinctly different handling character from a straight or evenly tapered blade.
