Full Tang Naginata

The full tang naginata represents one of Japan's most iconic polearm traditions, where the blade's steel extends continuously through the entire length of the handle, creating a single unified piece of exceptional structural integrity. Each piece in this collection is hand-forged from premium steels — including Damascus pattern steel, T10, and high-carbon 1060 — finished with lacquered saya, ornamental tsuba, and wrapped handles that honor classical Japanese aesthetics. Free standard shipping is included on all orders, along with a straightforward return policy for your peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does full tang mean in a naginata?
In a naginata, full tang means the steel of the blade extends as one continuous piece down through the entire length of the handle shaft, rather than stopping at the collar or fitting only partway into the handle. This construction method creates a structurally unified piece where blade and handle share a single steel core. For display and collection purposes, full tang construction ensures the piece maintains its assembled integrity over time — there's no separate blade section that can loosen from the shaft with age or humidity changes. It's also the construction standard that most closely reflects how high-quality historical naginata were built, which matters to collectors focused on authenticity of form.
How does Damascus steel differ from T10 in a naginata blade?
Damascus pattern steel and T10 tool steel represent two distinct approaches to blade character. Damascus is produced by layering and folding multiple steel compositions, then manipulating the billet to bring out a flowing, organic grain pattern on the surface. The visual result is unique to each blade — no two Damascus naginata will have identical patterning. T10 tool steel takes a different path: it's a high-carbon steel prized for its response to clay tempering. When a T10 blade is clay tempered, the differential cooling between the coated spine and exposed edge creates a genuine hamon, the undulating temper line visible along the blade. Damascus emphasizes visual individuality through surface pattern; T10 emphasizes authentic Japanese tempering craft. Collectors often choose based on whether they prioritize surface artistry or traditional heat-treat methodology.
What saya materials are used on naginata in this collection?
Saya across this collection are finished in several distinct styles: deep gloss black lacquer, red lacquer, white lacquer, granite-effect lacquer, and marble-styled finishes. Lacquered wood saya are the traditional format for Japanese polearm storage and display — the lacquer seals the wood against humidity, protects the blade edge from accidental contact, and contributes significantly to the overall visual composition of the displayed piece. Granite and marble effect finishes offer a contemporary collector aesthetic while maintaining the wood core construction. The saya finish is worth considering when selecting a naginata for display, as it interacts visually with blade color, tsuba material, and handle wrap color. Black lacquer saya tend to create high contrast with brighter blade polishes; red and white lacquer saya make a stronger standalone statement on a wall mount or stand.
How should I store and maintain a display naginata long-term?
Long-term storage of a full tang naginata requires attention to three factors: humidity, surface protection, and positional stress. Humidity is the primary concern — carbon steel blades will develop surface oxidation in environments above roughly 60% relative humidity without protective oil. Apply a light coat of camellia oil or choji oil to the blade surface every few months, or whenever the piece is handled, as skin oils accelerate oxidation. Store the naginata horizontally or on a purpose-built polearm stand to avoid putting continuous lateral stress on the handle-to-blade junction. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, which can fade lacquer saya finishes and dry out handle wrap materials over time. When handling for inspection or repositioning, use clean cotton gloves to prevent fingerprint oxidation on the polished steel surface.
Is a full tang naginata a good gift for a Japanese history collector?
A full tang naginata makes a distinctive and meaningful gift for someone who collects Japanese historical pieces, particularly because the naginata occupies a different cultural space than the more commonly gifted katana. Historically associated with warrior monks, noble households, and disciplined martial lineages, the naginata represents a chapter of Japanese martial culture that many collectors appreciate but fewer have represented in their display. The polearm format also creates strong visual presence — at around 118cm in overall length, a naginata mounted on a wall or displayed on a stand becomes an immediate focal point in a room. For gifting, pieces with distinctive saya finishes like red lacquer or granite-effect, or blades with visible hamon or Damascus patterning, tend to be the most visually rewarding choices for someone who will display the piece prominently.

Overall good weapon nice cutting and feel but something wrong with the glue job inside the saya as it would keep getting on the blade no matter how many times said saya cleaned it and washed it out with soap and water until I cut it in half and removed it and did my own glue job which seemed to fix that but yea cause of that I can’t give it a 5 star I’m sure you’d understand

1060 Carbon Steel Japanese Naginata - Black Hardwood Saya, Full Tang, Hand Forged Polearm 1060 Carbon Steel Japanese Naginata - Black Hardwood Saya, Full Tang, Hand Forged Polearm

The swords arrived 7-8 days after they were shipped. I had received an email confirming the order when I placed it, however I did not receive an email when it shipped, so I didn't know to look for them. They may have been outside a day before I noticed the boxes. With that said the boxes arrived in good shape with no obvious shipping damage. I'm not the biggest fan of the all styrofoam containers, due to it being a little messy when opening the packaging, but I can't deny it did an excellent job in protecting the swords as they arrived in perfect condition. I haven't had a chance to cut any water bottles yet, but all of the swords seem reasonably sharp. Everything seems well built with no obvious defects that I can tell at this time.
