Frequently Asked Questions

What types of sword holders are available and how do I choose the right one?
Sword holders come in three primary formats: horizontal table stands, wall mounts, and vertical floor stands. Horizontal table stands hold the sword in its traditional display orientation - edge up, handle to one side - and are available in single-tier for one sword and multi-tier for two or more. These are the most common choice for collectors who display on shelves, desks, or display tables. Wall mounts position the sword horizontally on the wall, saving surface space and creating a dramatic presentation at eye level. Vertical floor stands hold the sword upright, which is less traditional for Japanese swords but works well for very long blades or in spaces where horizontal display is not practical. The right choice depends on the number of swords you are displaying, the available space, and how you want to present the collection. Single-sword collectors often start with a simple single-tier table stand and add wall mounts or multi-tier stands as the collection grows. For a daisho pair, a double-tier table stand is the most historically appropriate and visually coherent option.
How do I position a sword correctly on a horizontal sword holder?
The correct position for a katana or Japanese sword on a horizontal holder follows traditional Japanese display practice. Place the sword with the cutting edge facing upward - this is the standard orientation for storage and display and reduces wear on the inner surface of the saya at the edge side. The handle should face to the right from the viewer's perspective, which reflects the way Japanese swords were stored in households and displayed in formal settings. Rest the sword on the pegs so that the weight is distributed between the two contact points - typically one near the base of the blade and one near the middle of the saya. The saya should not hang over the pegs at either end, as this puts unnecessary stress on the scabbard. If your holder has adjustable pegs, set them so the sword rests level without rocking. For display purposes, you can leave the sageo cord wrapped neatly around the saya or hanging alongside it according to preference.
What wood is used in these sword holders and does it affect display quality?
The sword holders in this collection are made from solid hardwood, with black-lacquered and natural-finish options available. Hardwood provides the density and rigidity needed to hold full-length swords without flex or creaking at the joints, and it finishes cleanly for a furniture-quality appearance. The black lacquer finish is applied to a smooth-sanded surface that provides a consistent, even color across the stand. The natural hardwood option, used in the dragon-carved double-layer stands, preserves the grain character of the wood and allows the carved detail to show clearly. The carving is worked directly into the solid wood rather than being a separately applied piece, which gives it dimensional depth that flat decoration cannot replicate. From a practical display perspective, both finishes are equally stable and durable. The choice between black lacquer and natural wood comes down to the display aesthetic you are building: black lacquer is formal and neutral, natural hardwood is warmer and more decorative.
Can a sword holder be used to store swords safely when not on display?
Yes, with a few considerations. A horizontal sword holder is an appropriate storage solution for swords that you access regularly, keep in a stable indoor environment, and maintain with basic carbon steel care. The sword rests in its saya, which protects the blade from dust and incidental contact. The stand keeps the sword elevated off the surface, which improves air circulation compared to laying the sword flat. For long-term storage in environments with variable humidity, a dedicated storage box or display case with humidity control provides better protection than an open stand. The open stand format is ideal for swords you examine and handle regularly, as it provides immediate access without the need to open a case. For swords kept as long-term investments or heirlooms, a closed case with acid-free lining and desiccant packets provides a more controlled environment. Most collectors use open holders for active display and closed storage for backup pieces.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.
