Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a T10 ninja sword different from a standard ninjato?
A T10 ninja sword and a standard ninjato differ primarily in the steel grade's heat treatment capability and the resulting blade quality. A standard ninjato in 1045 carbon steel or Manganese Steel is a reliable full-tang collectible that provides the straight-blade format and color or surface treatment options associated with the ninjato aesthetic, but its blade surface is typically uniform without a distinctive hamon. A T10 ninja sword is built from a steel grade whose fine grain structure and high carbon content allow for clay-tempered differential heat treatment that produces a visible hamon - the wave-patterned temper line along the blade edge that is the primary quality indicator in the Japanese sword tradition. On a T10 ninja sword's straight blade, the hamon runs as a wave along the straight edge geometry, creating a visual feature unique to the straight-blade format. The combination of the ninjato's geometric straight profile and the T10 blade's hamon detail gives the T10 ninja sword a visual and material character that no standard ninjato can replicate.
What is a chokuto straight blade and how does it relate to the ninjato?
A chokuto is a straight single-edged blade in the classical Japanese sword profile, predating the curved katana in the historical Japanese sword development timeline. The chokuto's straight profile is the most direct descendant of the straight single-edged sword that was the primary Japanese sword form before the curved katana emerged as the dominant design during the late Heian period. In the context of modern Japanese sword collecting, chokuto and ninjato are both terms for straight single-edged Japanese sword forms, and the two are closely related in design concept. The ninjato as a cultural concept - the straight-blade sword associated with ninja - draws on the chokuto form as its historical reference, and many pieces described as ninjato use the chokuto blade profile and proportion. In practical collecting terms, a T10 chokuto and a T10 ninjato in this collection both feature straight single-edged blades with clay-tempered T10 steel and visible hamon - the naming convention reflects the specific fitting style and cultural reference rather than a fundamentally different blade geometry.
How does the hamon appear on a straight-blade T10 ninja sword compared to a curved katana?
The hamon on a straight-blade T10 ninja sword and on a curved katana have the same fundamental formation process - clay-tempered differential heat treatment creates the boundary between harder edge and tougher spine - but the straight blade geometry creates a visually distinct presentation of the hamon. On a curved katana, the hamon follows the blade's sori curve from habaki to kissaki, and the interplay between the hamon's wave pattern and the blade's curve creates a flowing visual rhythm that is enhanced by the organic movement of the curved profile. On a straight ninjato blade, the hamon runs along the straight edge as a more linear feature - the wave pattern of the temper boundary is visible, but against the absolute straight geometry of the blade edge rather than against a curve. This creates a different visual character: the hamon on a straight blade has a more precise, direct quality that some collectors find a compelling alternative to the flowing hamon of a curved katana. The straight blade also allows the full hamon length to be seen in a single view without the perspective foreshortening that the katana's curve creates.
What display options work well for a T10 ninja sword?
A T10 ninja sword can be displayed effectively with standard Japanese sword display hardware, with some considerations specific to the straight-blade profile. Standard horizontal two-peg wall brackets accommodate straight-blade pieces well, with the pegs supporting the scabbard at two points along its length. The straight-blade's flat profile means it rests more naturally on horizontal pegs than the curved katana, which has a slight tendency to rotate due to its sori. For a display that emphasizes the hamon, position a directed light source - a spotlight or track light - at an angle to the blade surface: the hamon on a T10 blade is most visible under directed light at approximately 30-45 degrees from the blade surface. Against a neutral or dark wall background, the straight blade's geometric clarity reads as a bold linear form that is a compelling contrast to any curved katana pieces in the same arrangement. Tabletop stands in the katana-width profile work well for the T10 ninjato format, and the straight blade's stability on a horizontal stand makes it easy to position for inspection of the hamon detail.

It looks exactly how I wanted it but it came very dirty. It seems like the sleeve was a perfect size for the blade so I’m not sure how it got this dirty but I will give a update on how the sword is holding up after a few weeks/months.
