Frequently Asked Questions

What katana holder format is best for a single featured sword display?
For displaying a single katana as a featured piece, a single-tier table stand is the cleanest and most effective option. It positions the sword at a comfortable viewing height on a shelf or table surface, keeps it elevated to show the full length of the saya, and provides a stable base without any visual elements competing with the sword for attention. The black lacquer finish recedes visually, keeping the eye on the sword. For a more dramatic presentation, a vertical floor stand elevates the sword to a prominent position in the room and makes the saya and handle visible from above - particularly effective for katana with striking saya colors or ornate tsuka wrapping. The choice between horizontal table and vertical floor display comes down to personal preference and room layout. Horizontal display is more traditional and shows the sword in its natural resting orientation; vertical display is more theatrical and works well as a room focal point. Both options are available in this collection and both work equally well as single-sword display solutions.
How do I keep a katana from slipping off a horizontal holder during display?
A well-designed katana holder prevents slipping through a combination of peg angle, surface texture, and gravity. The horizontal pegs on these stands are positioned at a slight upward angle so that the saya rests against them naturally rather than rolling. The lacquered wooden pegs have enough surface friction to hold the saya in place under normal display conditions. If your display environment has vibration - for example near a door that closes firmly, on a surface with foot traffic underneath, or in a region with minor seismic activity - a small strip of museum putty pressed under each peg contact point provides additional grip without marking the saya finish. Alternatively, placing the katana holder on a non-slip mat grips the stand to the surface and prevents it from shifting when a sword is removed or placed. In most standard indoor display environments, neither of these additions is necessary - the stand holds the sword securely with its standard construction.
Can a wooden katana holder support a heavy odachi or nodachi sword?
The katana holders in this collection are sized and built for swords in the standard katana length and weight range - overall length of 95 to 110 centimeters and total weight including saya of approximately 800 grams to 1.5 kilograms. Odachi and nodachi swords are considerably longer and heavier: a standard odachi may be 130 to 160 centimeters overall and weigh 2 kilograms or more. A standard katana holder may not provide adequate support for a sword of this size for two reasons: the peg spacing may not align with the odachi's balance point, leaving the sword tip unsupported, and the overall length may overhang the stand by a significant amount. The structural load capacity of the stand is sufficient for the weight, but the geometry may not work. For long swords, a floor stand with adjustable bracket positions or a wall-mount system with adjustable pegs provides better support and more flexibility to match the sword's specific length and balance point.
Is a vertical floor stand or a horizontal table stand better for katana display?
Both formats have genuine advantages and the best choice depends on your display context rather than one being objectively better. A horizontal table stand follows the traditional Japanese presentation - swords were stored and displayed horizontally in Japanese households, and this orientation shows the sword's profile, curve, and saya design most clearly. It also makes the sword easy to examine: you can pick it up, draw it slightly, and replace it without repositioning anything. A vertical floor stand creates a more dramatic visual impact, particularly in a room with limited shelf space or where you want the sword to serve as a room-level focal point rather than a shelf-level display piece. The vertical orientation shows the tsuka and kashira from above, which can be an interesting perspective for swords with elaborate handle work. In practice, many collectors use a combination: horizontal table stands for day-to-day display and examination, vertical floor stands for a statement piece in a corner or entry area.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
