Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for a katana to be clay-tempered, and why does it matter for authenticity?
Clay tempering, known as tsuchioki in Japanese, is a differential hardening technique applied during the forging process. Before the final quench, the smith coats the blade's spine with a thick layer of clay while leaving the edge exposed or lightly coated. When the blade is plunged into water, the exposed edge cools rapidly and hardens to a high Rockwell hardness, while the clay-insulated spine cools more slowly, remaining tough and flexible. The boundary between these two zones creates the hamon - the visible wave-like temper line that runs along the blade. This is not decorative: it is the physical record of the metallurgical process. A clay-tempered blade genuinely performs differently from a through-hardened one, combining a cutting edge that holds well with a spine that absorbs shock rather than transmitting it as a crack. Every katana in this collection displaying a real hamon has gone through this authentic process, making the temper line a mark of genuine craftsmanship rather than surface decoration.
How can I tell whether the hamon on a katana is a real temper line or just etched onto the surface?
A genuine hamon produced through clay tempering has a softer, cloudy appearance with natural variation along its length. It often has activity within the line itself - small features called nie (coarse martensite crystals) and nioi (finer diffuse activity) that shift subtly as the blade is moved in light. Fake hamons, achieved by acid etching or mechanical grinding, tend to look sharper-edged and more uniform, almost like a painted line with consistent width. They lack the internal texture and do not change character under different lighting angles. On our T10 and Damascus katana, the product descriptions confirm the tempering method used. If you are ever uncertain, angling the blade under a single directional light source - such as a lamp or a window at dusk - will reveal the natural activity of a genuine temper line in a way that a surface treatment simply cannot replicate. The genuine hamon moves with the light; an etched one does not.
Are these authentic katana swords safe to handle and display at home?
Yes. These katana are designed as functional collectibles - hand-forged to traditional standards and finished to display quality. They are sharpened blades, so standard handling precautions apply: always draw and re-sheathe deliberately, never test the edge with your fingers, and store them on a proper sword stand or in their saya when not in active use. The wooden saya protects the blade when stored and prevents accidental contact. For households with children, we recommend storing the katana in a locked display case or a room with restricted access. The blades do not require any special environmental treatment beyond keeping them away from prolonged moisture. A light wipe with a soft cloth after handling removes fingerprint oils, and a thin application of choji oil every few months will maintain the surface finish and prevent oxidation. With this level of basic care, the blade holds its appearance reliably.
What is the practical difference between T10 carbon steel and Damascus steel in these katana swords?
T10 is a high-carbon tool steel with a small tungsten content that improves wear resistance. It takes an extremely fine edge and is well-suited for traditional Japanese swordsmithing because it responds cleanly to clay tempering and produces a clear, active hamon. The finished blade has a polished look with the temper line as its primary visual feature - refined and classical in character. Damascus steel, in the context of modern katana, refers to pattern-welded steel made by layering and folding different steel alloys together, then etching the surface to reveal the flowing grain pattern. This creates a visually striking appearance that is entirely unique to each blade. Both materials are premium choices for display and light handling when properly heat-treated. The decision comes down to aesthetics: T10 suits collectors who prefer a clean, traditional presentation, while Damascus appeals to those drawn to bold, complex surface patterns. Neither has a meaningful advantage over the other for a collectible display piece.

Delivered well and without issues. Blade and scabbard/saya are beautiful, although the scabbard is very tight, even tight for the initial unsheathing phase of the blade. Even knowing the wood will expand eventually, I may still need to file it down a little to allow for the blade to even be drawn. For any potential buyers as well (I was unaware of this), the scabbard's design is not placed onto the wood itself, but comes from leather sewn onto the scabbard. Otherwise a good purchase and the sword is quality, and functions really well for decoration and very light practical use.
