Frequently Asked Questions

What type of hardwood is used in the wood sword stands in this collection?
The wood sword stands in this collection are made from solid hardwood, with the specific species selected for appropriate density, workability, and finish quality for sword display furniture. Hardwoods in the density range used for display furniture - typically species comparable to oak, maple, or paulownia in the Asian hardwood tradition - provide the weight needed for a stable base and the surface quality for a clean lacquer finish. Paulownia wood has a specific historical connection to Japanese sword storage: it was traditionally used for sword storage boxes because of its stable, low-humidity properties that protect metal and lacquered surfaces from oxidation. Modern sword stands often use harder, denser species for structural applications where weight and rigidity are priorities. The natural carved versions preserve the grain character of the specific species, making each stand visually distinct in the way that solid wood always is. The lacquered versions cover the grain with a consistent finish, so the specific wood species is less visually relevant in that format.
Do carved wood sword stands require any special care compared to lacquered versions?
Carved natural hardwood sword stands require slightly more attentive dust management than lacquered versions because the carved recesses collect dust more readily than a smooth flat surface. A soft brush - a clean paintbrush or dedicated detail brush - is the most effective tool for cleaning carved areas, reaching into the carved grooves without applying pressure that could mark the wood surface. A soft cloth handles the flat areas. Neither the carved nor the lacquered finish benefits from furniture polish, silicone spray, or wax products. For natural hardwood with no surface coating or with a light oil finish, a very thin application of natural wood oil - applied sparingly with a cloth and then buffed off - can replenish the surface finish if the wood begins to look dry after years of indoor use. Avoid water contact on carved natural hardwood as it can raise the grain. The carved stands benefit from the same environmental stability that all wood furniture requires: away from direct sun, away from heat sources, and in a room with stable rather than cycling humidity.
Can a three-tier wood sword stand hold both katana and wakizashi on the same display?
Yes, a three-tier wood sword stand handles katana and wakizashi together on the same display without any issue. Katana and wakizashi differ significantly in length - a katana is typically 95 to 110 centimeters overall while a wakizashi ranges from 60 to 80 centimeters - but both fit comfortably on the same peg system. The shorter wakizashi simply rests on fewer centimeters of peg span, which does not affect stability or display quality. The traditional arrangement for a display that includes both types places the katana on a higher tier and the wakizashi below. If you have three swords - for example a katana, a wakizashi, and a tanto - the arrangement by descending length from top to bottom creates the most visually organized grouping and mirrors the traditional san-mai set presentation used in Japanese martial culture. The three-tier stand accommodates this configuration directly without any adjustment.
How do I assemble a multi-tier wood sword stand correctly?
Multi-tier wood sword stands in this collection are designed for simple assembly that requires no specialized tools. The typical assembly process involves inserting the tier brackets or columns into the base socket and securing them with the provided hardware - usually a simple friction fit, locking pin, or hand-tightened screw. Before beginning, lay all components out and compare them against the assembly diagram included with the stand. Identify the base, the column or post, and each tier bracket. The column typically fits into the base socket from above; check that it seats fully before proceeding to the tiers. Tier brackets slot onto the column at the designated height positions and are oriented so the pegs face outward horizontally. Tighten any hand-screw hardware until snug but not overtightened - hardwood can split if hardware is driven past hand-tight into a fixed joint. Once assembled, check that the stand sits level on the surface and that all tiers are horizontal by placing a small level across each peg pair. Any unevenness is usually corrected by adjusting the tier bracket position on the column by a few millimeters.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
