Frequently Asked Questions

Is a double sword stand the correct display format for a daisho set?
Yes. The double sword stand is the historically correct and visually appropriate display format for a daisho set. The daisho - the paired katana and wakizashi worn together as the defining symbol of samurai status - was displayed as a unit in Japanese households using a two-tier katana kake. The longer katana occupies the upper tier; the shorter wakizashi occupies the lower. Both swords are placed in the same orientation - edge up, handle to the right - which reinforces that they are a matched pair displayed by convention rather than simply two swords that happen to be on the same stand. This arrangement makes the proportional relationship between the two swords visible and creates the visual hierarchy that is central to how the daisho was understood and presented in Japanese culture. Displaying a daisho on a single-tier stand or individually on separate stands loses this relationship. The double sword stand restores it correctly.
What is the weight capacity of a double sword stand for two full-length katana?
A double sword stand built to the construction standard of this collection handles two full-length katana in their saya without stability or structural concerns. Two standard katana in saya represent a combined weight of approximately 1.5 to 3 kilograms depending on the specific swords. The stands in this collection are constructed with a base weighted appropriately for this load - the center of gravity remains low and stable whether the swords are present or not, and the peg and tier structure is built to carry the load without deflection. The practical stability question is not static weight but dynamic stability during the routine of removing and replacing one sword at a time. When one sword is on the stand and the other is being placed or removed, the stand sees an asymmetric load applied at an angle. The weighted base design handles this scenario reliably. For very heavy swords - long daito over 1.5 kilograms each, for example - verify the specific stand's construction before purchasing.
Can a double sword stand accommodate two swords of very different lengths?
Yes. A double sword stand accommodates swords of different lengths on the same display, and in fact the most common use case - the daisho - is precisely this: a longer katana paired with a shorter wakizashi. The peg support system works independently of the sword's overall length: both swords rest on the same peg positions, with the longer sword extending further to the side. The shorter sword will overhang the pegs less, but this does not affect its stability on the stand. The main consideration when displaying swords of very different lengths together is visual balance: if one sword is much longer than the other, the display may look lopsided unless the shorter sword is centered rather than placed handle-right. For highly mismatched lengths - for example a full odachi at 140 centimeters alongside a tanto at 40 centimeters - the peg span of a standard double stand may not support the odachi adequately, and a wider or adjustable display format would work better.
How do I set up a wall-mount double sword stand safely?
Setting up a wall-mount double sword stand correctly begins with locating the wall studs. Use a stud finder to identify the stud positions in your chosen mounting area and mark them clearly. Position the mount bracket at the desired height - typically at or above eye level for a wall display - and hold it in place while checking that it is level using a spirit level. Mark the screw hole positions on the wall. If the holes align with a stud, use wood screws of sufficient length to penetrate the stud by at least 3 centimeters for a secure hold. If the holes fall between studs, use toggle bolts or appropriate wall anchors rated for the combined weight of the stand and swords - typically 4 to 6 kilograms for a double sword display. Install the anchors according to their specific instructions, then attach the bracket. Test the installed bracket by applying firm hand pressure in all directions before hanging the stand. The bracket should show no movement. Once the bracket is confirmed solid, hang the double sword stand and check that it sits level before placing the swords.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
