Frequently Asked Questions

How is a katana sword stand calibrated differently from a general sword stand?
A katana sword stand is sized around the specific dimensions of a katana-length sword rather than a generic sword form. The primary calibration points are peg spacing, peg height, and tier clearance. Peg spacing on a katana stand is set so that the two support points - one near the tsuba end of the saya and one near the mid-saya - align with the typical weight distribution of a katana in its scabbard, keeping the sword level without requiring fine adjustments. The tier height for a double or three-tier katana stand is set for the diameter of a katana saya, providing enough clearance between tiers for easy access without excessive empty space that makes the display look sparse. A generic sword stand may use wider or narrower peg spacing that works for various sword lengths but does not fit the katana proportions precisely. For a collection focused on katana specifically, a stand calibrated for that sword type provides a cleaner, more intentional display result.
What are the standard dimensions of a three-tier katana sword stand?
A three-tier katana sword stand typically measures approximately 45 to 55 centimeters in height from base to top tier, with a base footprint of 20 to 25 centimeters deep and 30 to 40 centimeters wide. The tier spacing is approximately 12 to 15 centimeters between each level, providing enough clearance to access the handle of each sword without the upper sword's saya obstructing access to the one below. The peg-to-peg span on each tier is typically 45 to 55 centimeters, matching the optimal support points for a 100 to 110 centimeter katana in its saya. The total weight of the stand is typically 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms in solid hardwood construction, giving the base enough mass to remain stable under the load of three katana. These are approximate figures - specific dimensions vary by manufacturer and model. Before purchasing, confirm that the stand's tier clearance and peg span are appropriate for your specific swords if they are unusual in length or saya diameter.
Can I use a katana sword stand to display a nodachi or extra-long sword?
A standard katana sword stand is not ideal for nodachi or extra-long swords. Katana stands are calibrated for swords approximately 95 to 110 centimeters overall length. A nodachi is considerably longer - typically 120 to 150 centimeters or more. The peg support points on a katana stand may not align with the balance distribution of a nodachi, and the long blade may overhang the stand by a significant margin at the tip end without adequate support. For nodachi and other oversized swords, a wall-mount bracket system with adjustable mounting points or a purpose-sized floor stand provides better support and a more stable display. The wall mount allows the bracket positions to be adjusted to match the specific sword's length and balance point, which is the most reliable display solution for non-standard sword lengths. If you are building a display that includes both katana and longer swords, a combination of a katana stand for the standard-length pieces and a wall mount for the longer ones produces the best result.
How much space do I need to display a katana sword stand properly?
The space required for a katana sword stand depends on the number of tiers and whether you want access space around all sides or only the front. A single-tier katana stand with one sword needs a surface area slightly wider than the sword length - approximately 115 to 125 centimeters - and a depth of 25 to 30 centimeters for the stand base. Allow 20 centimeters of clearance in front of the handle end for comfortable access when picking up or replacing the sword. A double-tier stand needs the same surface footprint but with vertical clearance of approximately 35 to 40 centimeters above the display surface to accommodate the two tiers and the swords. A three-tier stand extends the vertical requirement to 50 to 60 centimeters. Wall-mounted display, which is an alternative to table-top stands, eliminates the surface footprint requirement entirely and uses only wall space at the chosen mounting height. For collectors with limited shelf space, wall mounting multiple swords while using table stands for featured pieces creates an efficient and visually organized display layout.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
