The mechanical forces applied to the blade-to-handle junction during any use or practice session scale with blade length - a lever arm of 35 to 45 inches produces far greater stress at the tang than a 27-inch katana blade does under the same conditions. Full-tang construction is therefore not merely preferred but essential for a battle-ready odachi: the blade steel must run from tip through the complete handle length, secured by a properly installed mekugi retention pin, to distribute these amplified forces safely through the full steel core rather than concentrating them at a small tang insertion point.

Maintaining a battle-ready odachi in good condition requires attention to the same maintenance routine as any high-carbon steel Japanese blade, applied consistently after each handling session. The blade's exceptional length means the oiling routine takes longer to complete than on a standard katana - a fact worth accounting for in your maintenance schedule. A full wipe-down with a lint-free cloth followed by a thin camellia oil coat along the complete blade surface is the standard protocol.
