Frequently Asked Questions

What distinguishes an authentic Japanese katana from a standard katana replica?
An authentic Japanese katana differs from a standard katana replica in the completeness and quality of its construction across all components. The blade must be forged from high-carbon steel - T10, 1060, or 1045 carbon steel grades - with proper heat treatment that achieves genuine blade hardness. A T10 clay-tempered authentic katana will show a visible hamon temper line, the most traditional marker of a properly heat-treated Japanese blade. The handle assembly on an authentic katana uses genuine samegawa ray skin under the ito wrapping, creating the traditional textured grip that distinguishes a genuine katana handle from simplified versions that use imitation materials. Full-tang construction with mekugi retention pins ensures structural integrity throughout the piece. The tsuba guard, fuchi-kashira fittings, and habaki blade collar should all be properly fitted metal components rather than decorative elements. The wooden scabbard with lacquer finish completes the traditional construction standard.
What steel grades are available in the authentic Japanese katana collection?
Authentic Japanese katana in this collection are available across the full range of high-carbon steel grades used in serious Japanese sword collecting. T10 carbon steel is the premium grade, available with clay tempering that creates a differential heat treatment producing a visible hamon along the blade length - the most traditional and visually distinctive mark of a properly constructed Japanese blade. The hamon on a T10 clay-tempered katana demonstrates that the edge and spine have been hardened to different degrees, replicating the construction method of historical Japanese sword-making. 1060 carbon steel provides excellent blade hardness in a grade widely used in quality katana construction. 1045 carbon steel is the most accessible grade, providing reliable full-tang construction and proper blade hardness appropriate to a genuine collectible. Damascus steel authentic katana combine fold-forged layered blade patterning with traditional Japanese fitting standards for collectors who want both blade material complexity and traditional construction.
How is the handle assembly constructed on an authentic Japanese katana?
The handle assembly on an authentic Japanese katana follows the traditional Japanese construction system with several specific components. The tsuka handle body is typically constructed from wood shaped to fit the full-tang blade. Samegawa genuine ray skin is wrapped around the tsuka body, creating a textured base layer that improves grip and provides the traditional material specified in classical Japanese sword construction. The ito wrapping - typically silk or cotton cord in a traditional diamond-pattern wrap - is applied over the samegawa, creating the characteristic geometric wrapping pattern of the Japanese katana handle. The fuchi and kashira - the metal collars at the base and pommel of the tsuka - are fitted metal components that complete the handle assembly. Mekugi retention pins through the handle and tang secure the complete handle assembly. The full handle construction from samegawa through ito wrapping to fuchi-kashira fittings creates the distinctive grip character that is immediately recognizable as a genuine Japanese katana handle.
How should I maintain an authentic Japanese katana to preserve its condition?
Maintaining an authentic Japanese katana requires attention to both the blade and the handle components. For the blade, establish a regular oiling routine: after every handling session, use a soft lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture from the full blade surface, then apply a very thin coat of camellia oil or mineral oil and buff away the excess. High-carbon steel requires this protection to prevent oxidation. For the handle assembly, keep the ito wrapping dry and away from moisture that can cause the cord to stretch or develop mildew. Inspect the mekugi retention pins periodically to confirm the handle is securely attached - they should fit tightly without play. For the lacquered scabbard, protect from moisture that can cause the wood to warp, and from abrasion that scratches the lacquer surface. Store the katana in a stable-temperature, low-humidity environment. For extended storage, re-oil the blade before putting it away and inspect periodically to maintain the protective oil coating on the steel surface.

Another beautiful sword! The reason I chose the Phoenix theme is because in the middle of May 2040CE The Mandate of Heaven will occur. This is caused by the Phoenix weapon. The 6th seal of Revelation, the sun will darken, worldwide volcanism & earthquakes, oceans slip basins, red rain red mud will fall from the sky. And the return of the Vapor Canopy. Cheers!

Clay-Tempered 1000-Layer Folded Steel Katana with Crane and Pine Copper Tsuba in Navy Blue Clay-Tempered 1000-Layer Folded Steel Katana with Crane and Pine Copper Tsuba in Navy Blue

Mekugi neboli namontované do rukoväte (Tsuky) moc esteticky.

I like knives and I have different types of knives and hand sharpener, electric sharpener (Tormek). I keep my knives always sharp. First time owner of a Katana. First impression is good. The steel is original Damascus. The hamon looks good. r

Things I did not like much:r
1. It was written that it is razor sharp. No, definitely not razor sharp, even noth sharp. It doesn't cut folded paper towel even though I press much. With fingers, I don't feel the sharpened. After sharpening my knives, I test them and I am what is sharp and what is notr
2. Polish is not good enough. In some points of blade, with my nail, I can easily feel the Damascus layers.r
3. Habaki: design is good, but workmanship looks poor, machine made.r
4. Saya: The thing that really bothered me was the saya. When you shake the blade, it makes wabbling noise. The blade does not perfectly fit to Saya. r
r
I think for this price, it was good enough.

Placed the order on July 14th and received the sword today. Apparently when TrueKatana says "in stock" that means in stock in China.....still, the tracking was not bad at all, I could log on and get info anytime, right up until delivery. I admit I was apprehensive about paying this much for a Katana, but I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy with this purchase. r
The fit and finish is absolutely perfect, I cannot find a flaw in this blade, handle or scabbard. It even came with a neat silk lined case that I wasn't expecting. The Hamon is perfect, the blade has a beautiful taper and it is true to all the features of a WWII type 98 Shin Gunto. Anyone worried about the quality matching the price should buy with confidence, you will not be disappointed with this Katana!!!!!!
