Frequently Asked Questions

What makes T10 steel different from 1095 in a katana?
Both T10 and 1095 are high-carbon steels in the 0.95-1.05% carbon range, but T10 contains an additional trace of silicon, which refines the grain structure during quenching and contributes to slightly improved wear resistance at the edge. In practice, collectors notice that T10 blades often produce a more dramatic, well-defined hamon after clay tempering compared to standard 1095, because the differential hardening process interacts differently with the two alloys. Neither is strictly superior - 1095 is slightly more forgiving during the forging process, while T10 rewards skilled heat treatment with exceptional visual and structural results. For a display-focused collection, the real hamon on a clay-tempered T10 blade carries significant visual and authenticity value.
Is the hamon on these T10 katana genuine or acid-etched?
The hamon on katana in this collection is produced through authentic clay tempering - a process where the blade spine is coated with a clay mixture before quenching, causing the edge and spine to cool at different rates. This creates a true crystalline boundary between the hard martensite zone at the edge and the softer pearlite zone at the spine. A genuine hamon has a soft, misty, three-dimensional quality under light, often showing activity such as nie (individual martensite crystals) or nioi (a cloudy band). An acid-etched hamon, by contrast, appears flat, uniform, and printed-on. The real hamon on a clay-tempered T10 blade is unique to that individual sword - no two are identical - which is a meaningful factor for serious collectors.
How should I store and maintain a blue lacquer saya long-term?
Blue lacquer saya require a little more care than plain wood because lacquer surfaces can develop micro-cracks if exposed to extreme humidity swings or prolonged direct sunlight. Store the saya away from UV light sources to preserve the depth and consistency of the blue finish. For the blade itself, remove it from the saya for storage periods longer than a few weeks - moisture can become trapped between the steel and the lacquer interior, accelerating oxidation. Before sheathing the blade, apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or neutral mineral oil using a soft cloth. Wipe the blade clean before any handling, and inspect the saya interior periodically for any moisture or debris that could scratch the polish.
What display setup works best for a Blue T10 Carbon Steel Katana?
A horizontal two-tier katana stand is the most traditional and structurally sound display option for a full-size katana. Orient the blade with the edge facing upward and the tsuka to the left - the conventional kamiza position in Japanese sword display etiquette. Pairing a katana with an aikuchi or tanto on the lower tier creates a visually balanced and historically resonant display. The blue saya in this collection pairs especially well with dark wood or black lacquered stands, which allow the color to read clearly without visual competition. Avoid glass-enclosed cases without ventilation, as enclosed spaces can trap humidity around carbon steel blades.
Are these katana appropriate as gifts for sword collectors?
A Blue T10 Carbon Steel Katana makes a particularly strong gift choice because it combines genuine material quality with a visually distinctive aesthetic that stands apart from generic decorative swords. The real hamon, full-tang construction, and coordinated fittings - dragon tsuba, hand-lacquered saya, ito-wrapped tsuka - give knowledgeable collectors something substantive to appreciate beyond surface appearance. For someone new to Japanese sword collecting, a piece with authentic clay-tempered T10 steel also serves as an educational introduction to traditional bladesmithing. The variety of saya designs and tsuba styles across this collection means it is possible to match a specific aesthetic preference - minimalist, ornate, monochromatic, or richly decorated - without sacrificing material standards.

New member of the family! I love this katana and my backyard is now full of decapitated water bottles. I've drank so many water bottles and filled them with tap water to not be wasteful--it's so addicting, getting that perfect clean slice on the water bottles, slicing multiple water bottles at once, slicing the larger jugs of waters, slicing fruits--this t10 steel is so resilient and cuts through the targets like butter. Of course, this is my first katana, my swordsmanship is that of an ultra-novice, but now I'm invigorated to learn--and learn more of the samurai history--after purchasing this instrument. What is great about TrueKatana is their unique designs, all the different scabbards and the subtle details on the hilts, the tsuba, the sheath, etc.--so much selection! I was warned that purchasing a katana would activate an addiction and, well, no regrets! 10/10, this model, the blue blade, it's mesmerizing. Just taking it out of the sheath and staring at it 😆 ...Okay, I think this review may have come off a bit long but trust me, purchase a katana from here and you'll understand!
